What a surprise...Warm flips to all-Christmas

KIRO is the #4 biller because they are the Seahawks/Mariners station. Nothing else. Who wouldn't want to advertise on the station that carried Seattle's THREE Super Bowl appearances in the last 10 years (with 2014 being a win)?

It's a lot more than that, although the Seahawks and Mariners help build a strong brand.

Sports delivers adult males very efficiently, and very often low 12+ numbers hide the fact that such stations are top 5 in men. Further, there are sports marketing dollars available to sports stations that music stations can't go for.

While I don't know the deals for those two teams (and, perhaps, someone else here does), but very often Sports teams buy time from stations and have their own sales organization. The station may have some time to sell but only to accounts that do not compete with the team's sales. So when you look at revenue on sports stations, you first have to find who gets the sports revenue... the team or the station.

So the "nothing else" you posted is really "everything else".

Man, I go away for a second and look how much more misinformation there is for me to correct. Firstly, David, what's your respected industry source that you quoted those 2015 billing numbers from? I'm quoting MillerKaplan. In 2015 the top 3 total spot and total revenue leaders were KIRO, KQMV and KISW. MillerKaplan is what every group looks at monthly, nothing else. KPLZ was ranked #8 in total spot in 2015. Again, not sure where you're getting your information.

Rob, you have no idea about anything so I don't know why you bother posting.

Crainbebo, Mariners and Seahawks billing isn't counted into MillerKaplan, so KIRO is #1 in local spot without Hawks or Mariners. Obviously their association with the two teams helps them gain billing they wouldn't have otherwise, but in-game commercial billing isn't reflected in their billing rank.

Well, the good news is KPLZ is still with us. No KVI-FM. Or a bigger KOMO-FM. Or Kokomo, 24 hours.

Marina Rockinger is filling in for Kent & Allen, other than that and a blurb about "the new sound" of Star 101.5, it seems like business as usual at 101.5 MHz....

Kelly and Rob, where do I send the money? I'll admit now I was totally wrong on this one. Kelly, Rob, David or anyone else, answer me this question. Why would a station intent on returning to its usual brand and format after the holidays drop it for a month? It seems more logical to me to just keep the brand around through the season but hipe the new sound after the season.

Wow how times have changed. The 25-54 rankings haven't been discussed here in a couple years, and I don't have access to the numbers. David, on the other hand, should, not sure what he's looking at or what you're looking at for that matter. I trust you though, since you're in the market. That makes me wonder though if the changes are going to be deeper than anyone expects?

Has anyone analyzed the music on KPLZ today compared to what it was before they went All-Christmas? Sometimes music changes can seem subtle, but are actually a significant change.

Be very cautious about using December numbers. This is the month with the meter debacle, and while Nielsen claims Week 1 still had good proportionality despite nearly 20% missing meters, there are enough big wobbles throughout the 48 markets to cast doubt or, at least, the taint of unreliability on the results.

Why is KRWM only #2? I thought every year they had a huge #1 with Christmas. Were people this year sick of hearing White Christmas and All I Want for Christmas is You? Or is it the negativity that 2016 has brought us this year...not just politically, but all of the crime activity, terrorism in Europe, and the unexpected celebrity deaths (which continued last night with the passing of George Michael of Wham! - RIP!)

The December book took place in the calendar month of November (11/3 to 11/30). For the Christmas effect, we have to wait for the Holiday book, coming out in January. For stations that switched Thanksgiving week, December only includes about one week.

Nothing really jumps out. Something about throwbacks. But the 1980s and '90s have never really left KPLZ's playlists. Maybe calling attention to it?

I'm noticing more 80s, 1 or 2 per hour. I'm also noticing more songs from the mid 2000s (Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love, Fergy - Big Girls Don't Cry launching the new format) as well as others.

Not to blow my own horn, but I predicted KPLZ would try and skew a bit older on this thread over a month ago. My post from November 23rd:

"So...the "new Star 101.5". OK this becomes more apparent. Star is still Star, but there will be some music refocusing. My guess is a little less hot AC and back to the basics of mainstream AC, but the actual change will be minor. All about perception and marketing. The lines today are quite blurry. Hence, not much to see here."

Though I don't really know if this is the correct strategy. Obviously, the 25-49 demo is still important to them. A good tell would be how much George Michael they play this week.

Maybe KPLZ will slowly bring back the "80's Lunch" and the "90's at 5" they used to have a few years ago?

Sure, I'll take the bet, we'll find out who has to pay who on December 26.

So Bob, here we are on December 27th and KPLZ as Star 101.5 has returned. May I remind you of your commitment?

Certainly I don't plan on taking your money, but you eating a yummy crow sandwich in front of those of us who were right, will suffice.

What "new format", Bob? The new one in your mind? There is NO NEW FORMAT. Just tweaks to the old one.

Whatever, Bob. We're waiting for you to admit you were wrong. Don't make us charge interest on paying up on the bet you lost.
