Usher Plays Super Bowl Halftime

Next to arrive on track number two: the "back in my day" trolls who aren't happy unless it's a performance by some geezer rock act.

If the mere mention of Usher isn't enough for them, perhaps the inclusion of the Kardashians, at least in the promo, will be? :)

There for a while there were a bunch of alternatives. MTV got into the action with Beavis and Butthead's "Butt Bowl", and there was also the Puppy Bowl for those who'd rather watch puppies at play rather than "The Big Game" (don't call it the Super Bowl unless you're licensed to do so or they will come after you with guns a'blazing. They even went after at least one church for advertising a Super Bowl Party without being licensed to do so. For them and most other mere mortals, it shall be known as "The Big Game").

With all this talk of Rock and Roll geezers, keep in mind that Usher is no spring chicken either! Although he was quite young, it's been thirty years since he first hit the Urban Contemporary charts. And Usher's most popular song "Yeah" was out nineteen years ago! So, you may have some younger R&B fans who feel the same way about Usher's geezer status, LOL!

And if you look a the shows over the decades, you can see a pretty good variety of artists, the age of the artists, their ethnicity and musical style. As someone who has only seen the half-time show once (to see Shakira), that list looks fairly balanced over the years.

Keep in mind that the halftime show is a sponsored event, mainly put on by Apple Music and Roc Nation. Roc Nation is owned by Jay-Z. So they have a role in who performs.

The half time show is about mass appeal and spectacle. It's a visual event. Someone like Peter Gabriel could also be a great choice. His current tour is outstanding.

Prince probably delivered the most memorable performance. Some others were dreadful. It's safe to say they are not targeting the over 50 crowd with the half time show...
