AM Frequency of the Week: 1170

Boise Idaho

Nights
KLOK Punjab. Shouldn't be hearing it if the DA was working. But it's a good signal.
Hash from 1140 KGEM & KSL HD.
Tulsa used to be a regular.

WWVA's night signal must go right over me then. I have seen plenty of reports of them being heard at night well to my west over the years, but I've never picked them up here. I don't camp out on 1170 or anything, but every time I've checked in the Columbus area, it's nothing but mush next to WHAM.
Even if I happen to be along 70 out near Cambridge at night, or on 77 between there and Canton, their null is really deep. It's very noticeable once you get south of Canton.
That is strange, I think I am almost due west of you. I am still learning about how signals propagate at night, makes sense there may be a dead area though. There's a couple local stations in Dayton I have to work to pick up at night...20 miles away!

The pattern map on radio-locator.com would indicate WWVA going not far at all to the west.
Having lived and worked in Springfield, I know what you mean about the Dayton AMs, I think WING is the worst in that area. WHIO takes interference from Hickory NC and other places.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Lots of slop from close-by KRDY on 1160.

Sunset: Out of the mess, XERT "Ke Buena" in Reynosa and KTSB in Tulsa start to emerge.

Night: When KRDY drops to night power/pattern, the slop is reduced a bit. It's still XERT and KTSB, the latter of which has decoded into HD briefly a few times on my Sangean HDR-16.

Sunrise: XERT often dominates when it goes to day power, but KTSB outlasts it.

DX/Retro: Before XECD "La Romántica" was retired, I heard it a few times at night.

Central Kentucky:

WDFB Junction City (Danville). At only 26 miles away, it's not a particularly strong signal for 1000 watts, but it is 2 towers directional to the south.

Odd for a Daytimer but I guess they are protecting adjacent channel WCVX in Covington.

Nights: WWVA. Listened a lot back in the days when it was country.

Here in Wood Dale, IL (near NW suburb of Chicago):

Daytime: just splatter from WYLL
Nighttime: WWVA or KTSB

DX/Retro: others heard include KSTT (now KBOB) (Davenport, IA), WLKE (now WFDL) (Waupun, WI), WCXN (Claremont, NC), WDEK (Lexington, SC), KFOW (Waseca, MN), KJXX (Jackson, MO), HJNW (Cartagena, Colombia) and XERT (Reynoso, Mexico). Latest new logs on this frequency are WGMP (Montgomery, AL) in 2022 and WDFB (Junction City, KY) in 2023.
Good catch on WDFB. They appear to have a null to the north...

It has been mentioned elsewhere in these discussions that WKLB Manchester KY signs on at 5:45 AM on full power (due to a glitch in their license that allows them to do so) and would wreak havoc on WHIO locally.
I was in Dayton a couple of times on business and witnessed it. I was staying at a hotel north of downtown Dayton near I 70.

I remember that, and thanks to a Cox engineer, that license was fixed. It did indeed wreck WHIO in December. WKLB had a jingle that just sung "weather" that was really prominent.

East SFBA (western Diablo Valley, near Walnut Creek): KLOK around the clock (I couldn't resist the near wordplay :) )

At night, what I thought was a weak signal is actually interference from one of the IBOC sidebands from KSL 1160. KLOK is otherwise clear.

DX/Retro: others heard include KSTT (now KBOB) (Davenport, IA), WLKE (now WFDL) (Waupun, WI)
KSTT was top a 40 daytime go-to during my college days. 1kw but still a good day signal from 60 miles away. They vanished completely at night to make way for KVOO, Bobby Rich, KSTT program director (who went on to bigger and better things) once helped out our college radio station by loaning us records for a Million dollar weekend". Fun fact: KSTT was located on the Mississippi River with a panoramic view from the main studio of the river. Transmitter was in Milan, IL.

I've heard both KSTT (as KBOB) and WFDL each a few times a few times at my home location, but not recently.

The retro days back in Queens NYC were far more interesting on 1170 than they are here in NE PA. In those days, from Cape May up the Jersey Shore and then continuing on up the Hudson River, every town seemed to want an 1170 station.
The only one to reach the part of NYC's Five Boroughs where we lived was WBRW 1170 Bridgewater. Recall has them with three or four towers pretty much on (or in) the banks of the Raritan. They were a pretty good sounding A/C station back in the late 70s.
(A retrospect thought here is that the essentially complete fragmentation of the pop music scene of the late 70's accelerated the demise of the full-service A/C approach on AM. At the least, the mainstream pop music pie in the process of being divided into arena-band rock, disco, punk, rap, Oldies, traditional AoR, and even country (plus, MTV to finish it) certainly didn't help stations like WBRW much.)
There was a 70's pirate (a WRMC) from New Jersey that was heard regionally.
And an 'HJKK' was logged on 1175. I guess that was from Colombia,

The nighttimes here, and there, meant having a choice of WWVA. Hmm. Never knew until this thread that WWVA was directional at night. Thanks, folks!

Good for that engineer! I wonder what WKLBs owner thought of having his license modified?

The transmitter site is in a little clearing off to the right by the Daniel Boone Parkway, surrounded by a mountain. About a mile from the Manchester exit.

Interesting! I've also heard WCBL, Benton, KY under WHIO a few times. Looking a little further, the issue with WKLB was only in December, due to a typo on the license for just that month.

In the Wilkes-Barre(Northeast PA) area, daytimes usually nothing. Nights, it's always WWVA from Wheeling, WV. What's strange about this station is that it carries religious programming usually heard around the midnight hour prior to Coast to Coast AM, plus it is owned by IHeartMedia.

Who did you like listening to on KSTT?

In east-central Iowa: I get a weak KBOB from Davenport, Iowa. It's a bit of a reach but I used to try to pull it in in its KSTT days. Can't say I remember the names of any of the jocks, but I always thought it was a pretty good operation.
Nighttimes, I usually hear a weak KBOB or WWVA. Long ago I would occasionally hear KVOO (now KTSB) at night, but I can't remember hearing it for years now. KTSB does carry a sports format as does KBOB, so it could be in the mix without my realizing it.

I remember Bill Vancil and Lou "The good guy" Gutenberger. Vancil went on to a long and successful career in his hometown of Madison, WI (at WISM). Station owner Fred Epstein and his wife did a talk show weekdays at 9 am. Totally broke the format but since he owned the place, he got away with it! Then from 10 am-3pm KSTT laid off the harder rock, but was still a very good listen.
Steve Bridges has mentioned on KCJJ that when he was working nights at KSTT back then, people used to flash the front window on Brady Street coming back from the bars. He also said at one point he saw a jock’s wife or girlfriend chasing her cheating man down Brady Street with a gun! Did you ever listen to Steve when he was on there?

I could tell a story about a secretary, a bar. and her drunken boss from CFRA in Ottawa (a block away from my hotel. But we're already too far OT, so I'll spare everyone the gory details. :)

As for Captain Steve.
He actually effectively replaced me when I left one of my early Iowa gigs. You guys can probably connect the dots anyway without my help.

That’s cool! Captain Steve has been on so many stations, give us a hint. You should call in to the morning show sometime!
