KHGV-LP to go silent

Status

KHGV-LP 99.7 has filed an STA to go silent, stating: “KHGV-LP will go Silent on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at 11:59 for several reasons including staffing, technical, financial, etc. – a “perfect storm” of related problems.”

The station has been on the air for a number of years with an Oldies format; could be heard in the SE part of Houston.

FWIW, they had shifted from Oldies to more of a Rock-leaning Classic Hits format a couple of months ago.

This was the one with Johnny Goyen who was formerly on KFMK years ago?
Goyen has been on Houston Radio Platinum in the past, but not sure if he is still involved. That is what you might be thinking of.

(Be aware the radio outlet given on their website is a station we are not allowed to talk about on this board, so please don’t go there.)

Isn't KHGV is the station that Bob Edwards (Parker) was running as a 'neighborhood' LP (Houston Garden Villas radio?) I know I heard a Johnny Goyen produced radio program on it as recent as just a few months ago. I feel bad for these guys. And if I am correct, this signal MIGHT be the LPFM/Translator (whatever) to remain in the same hands and with the same content longer than any other in S/E Texas. It sounded slick.

KHGV-LP 99.7 and KMAZ are the only two low power station that sounded like they run with thought put into these stations. Not like the other lower power stations that are mess in the Houston area.

This is the Johnny Goyen reference from the KHGV web site - KHGV-LP RADIO FOR GARDEN VILLAS

Not that it matters now, but I noticed back on Jan 11, 2024 that their online stream was no longer working. The station had been removed from the database at Frontier Nuvola Smart Radio which is the service that my Sangean WiFi (WFR-28) radio uses. (I recall the date because I keep a spreadsheet file of the online stations that I use and I made a note of it.)

Too bad since I enjoyed occasionally listening to KHGV-LP.

Cheers! Bob F.

I gotta show love to KYBY and KCYB. I know they’re not exactly Houston but I enjoy them.

Another personal jukebox masquerading as an educational institution bites the dust. Good riddance.
In what way was it masquerading as an educational institution? To my knowledge, they were not owned by the KSBJ Educational Foundation or the Educational Media Foundation. In fact, I believe the licensee is the civic club of the subdivision, which appears to be a representative of the residents of the community, and not an educational institution.

I thought it did *exactly* what it was supposed to do as a community signal. I'm sad it went away.
LPFM's are supposed to be licensed to non-profit educational institutions for educational purposes. Just playing your favorite oldies doesn't qualify.

Because LPFM licensees are supposed to be non-commercial, educational organizations. Michelle at REC sums it up well:
"LPFM radio services are only licensed to educational organizations to advance an educational purpose, new LPFM licensees must demonstrate that they are truly educational organizations. This does not mean that the organization must have classrooms. LPFM applicants need to provide descriptions of the nature of its proposed station programming, and if possible, program schedules. The LPFM applicant should also demonstrate how the proposed station programming will be used to advance its educational purpose."
Playing your favorite oldies ultimately doesn't qualify.
