Falcons (and other teams) radio flagships history

Before landing on WZGC in the last decade, what was the Falcons’ flagship history up to that point? (As well, who has aired Hawks, Flames and Thrashers games?)

The Flames (and the Falcons) were on BM/EZ WLTA 100 (the present Q99.7) for a time in the 1970s. The Flames I think were on WLTA their entire time in Atlanta.

UGA football and men's basketball has been on WSB for as long as I can remember.

Tech sports were on WGST (920) for decades until WCNN (WGTW for a time in the late 80s as Stardust 68) picked it up in 1984. WGST (now at 640) picked Tech sports back up for a few years in the late 90s/early 2000s during the 105.7 simulcast days, and Tech was also on 106.7 and WQXI (790 The Zone) for a time.
Keep in mind Tech owned WGST until I think 1974 when the Board of Regents sold WGST to Meredith and the funds were invested in WREK. WREK is non-com and consequently couldn't do commercial sports, WGST was commercial.

WGST 920 also had the Falcons for a time in the 70s and into the 80s. They may have been simulcasting with WLTA for a time.

The Gladiators and the G-Braves/Stripers were on WDUN until Cox snatched them both and put them on TOSOTR.

You didn't ask about the Braves, but when I moved to Atlanta in 1994, they were on WGST simulcast with 105.7, which I believe was still an LMA owned by McClure.

The Braves, after being bad for so many years, had become great and WSB, whose owner Cox had the money, outbid WGST and took the Braves back in 1994. I recall the morning after it was announced, WGST's Tom Hughes said the station lost the Braves because "I refuse to wear my hair like Don Sutton."

After 3 or 4 seasons, WSB decided whatever astronomical amount that had beaten out WGST for the Braves wasn't worth it and dropped the team. Then, they signed with Clear Channel for a period; I can't even recall which station(s) carried them. And then it was on to Cumulus/Dickey (with Lew and John Dickey running Cumulus).

The Braves are now on a 10-year deal with Dickey (680 and 93.7). For a while, when Cumulus was still under contractual obligation, 100.5 broadcast the games. Now the team has no full FM station in its home market, only the translator at 93.7.

I think WQXI carried the Falcons in the 60's listeningto an aircheck from that era. I know WSB carried them in the early 90's. Larry Munson did play x play during Glanvilles run and shoot days.

When the Braves were on WGST from 1992-1994 (Cox had refused to re-up with the last-place Braves at the end of the 1990 season), they had a simulcast on WPCH 94.9. When WGST had the Braves later on, and the WGST simulcast on 105.7 had gone away, they had the simulcast on 96 Rock.

Off the top of my head:
  • 1966–91: WSB
  • 1992–94: WGST (and WPCH at night)
  • 1995–2004: WSB
  • 2005–09: WGST (and on FM at 96.1 from 2005–06 and 2009 and 94.9 The Bull from 2007-08)
  • 2010–Present: WCNN (and on Rock 100.5 from 2010 until the launch of All News 106.7, where it stayed until the shift to K-Love, when it returned to Rock 100.5 through the 2021 season)

I think that's right.

The Stripers are now on the web through WCON (thought maybe on WCON-HD2 as well?).
I checked and the Stripers are only on the WCON stream. Does WCON have an HD-2? What do they play the rest of the time?

The Glads are also only streaming now as well.
