93.3 tower destroyed

It is however tax deductible.. so thats a quasi gift, in a way
That's interesting. You're probably right. I've purchased advertising...um, underwriting mentions from non-commercial stations for clients of agencies that are my clients. The underwriting mentions were part of bigger buys that consisted largely of commercial stations. I highly doubt either the advertiser or agency thought of deducting them from their taxes.

I'm an NPR member station PD, its one of the things i know ;)

Would the 105.3 WRDG site work for 93.3? Admittedly, they might need to reduce facility class to use that one.

The other one that comes to mind, although not very useful for ATL coverage, would be the 88.1 / 94.5 site to the ENE of Columbus.

I would have to believe the destroyed tower site is fully insured, in which case it'll likely be rebuilt eventually.

And that is partially because all costs a business incur except T&E are fully deductable. So whether the recipient of the buy is a for-profit concern or not, it looks the same on the P&L.

I remember when this was WFDR back in the late 70s, it had a 100k signal from Manchester and was very strong in NE Atlanta. The format was Top 40 soul???

My Dad was co owner of WFDR. FM started with a classical/big band format at 30kw ERP…then increases to 60kw ERP…then to 100kw ERP. Converted to R&B/Soul in summer of 1972.

I also remember it during its R&B heyday. It basically covered the Atlanta-Columbus-Macon triangle with a strong signal. This was before V-103 became an R&B powerhouse. If I remember correctly, WFDR in Manchester, WJIZ in Albany, and WEAS in Savannah were the only three 100Kw FM signal’s catering to the R&B format in GA at that particular era in time. Most R&B stations were still on the AM dial.

I just got a call from someone at the station and they thanked me for being a monthly giver and mentioned the options for listening to the station including the 106.3 translator near me. It was a voice mail so I could not tell them that the main station I liked the most was LF Radio on their HD3 signal and my only option now is to stream until the new tower is finished. I at least wish they could rent a HD subchannel of an Atlanta station to make listening better near the city. I know they already use a HD subchannel of 102.3 and 99.3 in the northeast part of the market. Since 104.1 is letting use an Aux tower maybe they could pay 104.1 to be on HD2. 93.3 is so limited by 104.1 and 92.9 .

Wish they would change their format.

Yep...you are correct. The signal is those days could be picked up almost to Montgomery, AL across to Macon, GA and as far south as Albany, GA. The stick was only 300' AGL, but was situated on the Pine Mountain ridge just south of Manchester, GA. Incidentally, this was the second FM signal in the U.S. at the time to go with the R&B/Soul format outside of NYC (WBLS). We were the first Mutual Black Network (MBN) affiliate on the FM dial outside of NYC as well.

Those are some interesting facts about the old WFDR. Could pick it up during the daytime in both Cordele, GA and Tuskegee, AL. Came in well mornings and nights in my hometown of Fitzgerald, GA.

The way that signal carried, I always figured that it was more like a 1,500’ stick.

I was really disappointed when the format was changed from R&B to Country!!

How many people in the demo utilizing a downgraded site versus licensed site?
It would be interesting to see the coverage circles and pop counts from less tall towers closer to the market.
Many companies have sold off their vertical real estate. (Some sold ALL their real estate!)
Did the site have other income? You don't need 1600 feet for cellular.
The strobes were a pain and expensive to maintain. I had tower guys walk away when they saw a 1600 foot climb with no elevator. Try lugging a 50 pound transformer and tools in a bag 1600 feet straight up!
It does boil down to cost for donated dollars. I suspect a tall tower, in 2023, may not be a best use of money.
RTN is a well run organization and will make the correct decision.
Pfft Vacherie LA had a 2000 ft with no elevator....when I was EGR Mgr of iheart NOLA, the tower crews were up there at night for over a week...a tower crew will climb if the $ is right. 94.5 Dallas was on a 2000ft that Bonneville built with no elevator...even had platform at 1200ft...go figure...

Im beginning to doubt that they are going to build a 1600 foot stick and that they will probably build a shorter stick and just up the power to maximum for a C1 facility. They lose the height advantages but they were not happy with the results with the last upgrade. I keep watching for FCC applications. Nowadays the streaming apps are the now and the future.

I see that RTN found another tower in which to broadcast with 18kw which will give them c3 coverage it looks like. Im not sure what tower they plan on using but they want the STA as soon as possible since the 60dbu right now covers 254k people while this proposed will cover 940k people which still about half of the full WVFJ licensed signal. Its owned by Verticle Bridge

Do you know where the tower is or what is already on it?

I read the proposal which was granted today by the FCC again and can not tell whats on that tower now. I did read that this tower is 400 meters west of the WALR aux site that WVFJ is using. It sound likes it was once used for a UHF station. Draft Copy « Licensing and Management System « FCC
The 105.3 tower is close to the WALR aux site, but I thought it was closer than 400 meters, and I believe it's east, not west, of the WALR aux. But I can't think of any other tower in that immediate area.
