Since I am not in SD this week, I have been trying to pick up XETRA in LA and the IE since Saturday to no avail. Is is on, is it on low power?

AM 690

Hi David, The 690 signal is on, it is Espanol. I cannot tell about the power, however.

I hear through the grave vine the call letters will be changing.<P ID="signature">______________

Supposedly the lineup will be from Mexico initially, but what is unusual is that I can not get it at all here, and up till last week, it had a noisy but receivable signal in Glendale. And over the weekend, no night signal here or in the Coachella Valley, where it usually is quite strong.

Will the XETRA call letters then be available for use by some other local AM station. One with one Xtra X, perhaps?

Tried it on the way home and the signal is very week in OC. A theory here. Could it be that they no longer care about the LA/OC audience and hence can save a bundle by dialing back the power to cover TJ?

Nope. The new studios and offices are in LA. The hav eannounced it in Hispanic Media weekly as an "LA¨ station.

No. The calls are being changed so they do not match the FM of the same letters.

Re: AM 690/LA station-what a laugh

An "LA signal"
They are delusionial. XTRA 690 squirts up well into
coastal OC and LA, but not into the interiors well.
While it is a great stick, It's not an LA stick,
never was, never will be. You would think someone
would learn by history.

But 91X can officially call itself "Xtra" right?

With the apparent spectacular success of La Pantera, it remains to be seen if the new 690 en espagnol will be the super fantastic success they are apparently envisioning it to be.

I would guess so. Even if they changed calls, they could keep the name.

Well, if anyone can spend the necessary time to develop a format, it is Grupo Prisa. They own about 1100 radio stations in 8 or 9 countries, plus magazines, newspapers and TV interests. In Mexico, they are partnered with Televisa, the largest TV conglomerate in the Western Hemisphere.

No, uh...
You don't understand what I'm asking, sorry.

91X is XETRA FM. But now that they will be the only ones with the XETRA call letters either on AM or FM, won't they now have the exclusive right to call themselve's Xtra91FM? I know they probably won't but my question is theoretical.

And if Finest City were to come into operation of a Mexican owned AM, is it possible that they would be able to apply for the XETRA AM calls? I don't know how the Mexican system works, but I thought you might.

And, way in the back of my head, I'm wondering if Finest City and BCA could ever coordinate so that the Sports AM in San Diego and 91X are re-united, since the men who operate both companies seem to have worked together not too long ago.

I guess what I'm asking is, could XTRA AM ever come back to San Diego? And could it come back as a Sports Station?

they haven't worked together in 10 years and why would 91x and the sports station come together??

Since there are not too many FMs in Mexico with XE calls, and all are pre-70's heritage stations, I have no point of reference. The SCT seems fairly flexible on calls other than the prefix, so I would bet that the current licencee (not the LMA holder) could buy an AM and put XETRA back on it. But I doubt a separate licensee could.

But all of that firepower does not necessarily success make.

Eventually, it does. They are a success in every country and every market they are in, starting with a 55% share of all radio listening in all of Spain. It is a formidable group. Interestingly, their model in every country is networked simulcast stations by the dozens, with zero localism.

And 91.1 and 690 are both owned by the same Mexican licnesee, right?

Yes, according to the SCT website: XETRA Comunicaciones S.A. de C.V. (in English: XETRA Communications, Inc.) AM city of license is Rosarito, BN; FM city of license is Tijuana, BN.
