WPVI Philadelphia News Adds Two Journalists

Boyer starts weekend evenings next weekend. Did a couple of early morning debuts this weekend. Looks like they're continuing the recent trend of not promoting up the ladder.

Chris Sowers has been at 6abc for over a decade, he should have been promoted as the weekend evening weatherman. I guess 6abc is changing their trends of not promoting from within.

Tahronda Thomas has been a channel 6 for a few years now so she isnt exactly new, she was named the stations first race and cultural reporter.

Agree he absolutely should have been promoted. Then again, this isn’t the first time by a long stretch. Folks like Rick Williams, Cecily Tynan and Monica Malpass all moved up from mornings to evenings (ditto Walter Perez on weekends, moving up to replace Rob Jennings). When they launched a new 4 pm show, no such consideration for the morning team. Ditto when they had their first opening after that newscast launched, nor the second it appears.

The biggest difference is Sowers actually did the evenings for months. Good enough to do double shifts on Saturdays and to do a weekday evening when it’s Christmas Eve, but consistently refused a weekday presence except Fridays at noon.

That’s no knock on the newest team member, but come on. Here is someone who knows his stuff, has a good presence and did the job on a long term sub basis. There was no reason not to move him to weekend nights and slot the newest member on weekend mornings.

I agree he is a constant presence and is very knowledgeable about the weather and presents interesting facts about the weather and what the future may hold.

Its probably the management above channel 6 that gives orders and they probably wanted their newest member on weekend evenings.

Channel 6 probably doesnt want to break up its morning team for ratings and continuity purposes they have all been together 16 17 years.

Remember Cecily Tynas started on 6abc way back in 1995 as the weekend weathercaster and she was the first weekend weathercaster channel 6 had since Paul Norton left the weekend broadcast around 1975 to focus on his duties as station announcer and public affairs producer and host. It took 20 years before channel 6 hired a weathercaster for weekend newscasts. Rob Jennings anchored the news and the weather the first 18 years or so of his channel 6 weekend anchor tenure, probably done for budgetary reasons. Cap Cities was known to be a cost effecient company.

Oh sure, Cecily was a weekender. Adam moved up the line from weekend mornings to evenings before jumping to weekday nights. Karen and David bypassed moving up to weekend nights and moved right to weekday mornings. Melissa moved up from weekend mornings to nights and added plenty of weekday fill-in.

Not breaking up a weekday team needlessly is one thing, though they could have done the Rick/Monica route and moved the anchors up to 4 pm when that show was new out of the gate. But they do break up teams—demoting Brian Taff for instance, from 4 and 10 to noon and 4. So it’s not unheard of.

That being said, it’s pretty glaring that they limit Sowers’ presence needlessly. And after he stepped up for months when they needed him to, being relegated back to the more limited role seems unwarranted and not based on skills and talent.

At least one person who earned a promotion tp a job they've been doing receives one. :)

I'm wondering if this means actually taking her off the Sunday night shift, or if the actual schedule will be Monday through Thursdays plus Sundays as it has been.
