Winter Storm Snaps Tower For KOEZ Des Moines In Half.

A winter storm that brought snow, rain, ice and wind to much of Iowa over the weekend toppled the top half of the broadcast tower for Saga soft AC “104.1 EZ FM” KOEZ Des Moines. According to Saga VP of Engineering Tom Atkins, the top 100 feet of the tower, including the station’s main transmitter, was brought to the ground.

As of Sunday morning, KOEZ, a 100,000-watt Class C, was operating at full power at a lower height from an auxiliary antenna.

“The good news is we don’t have to take the 104.5 translator off to keep KOEZ on the air,” Atkins said in an internal email obtained by Inside Radio, referring to the Des Moines-licensed translator K283CC at 104.5, which relays the HD2 channel of active rock sister KAZR.

It says "...the top 100 feet of the tower, including the station’s main transmitter, was brought to the ground."

Since when do stations have their transmitter up near the top of the tower?

Someone at Insideradio needs to take a quick technology lesson.
