Windows shell replacements

I got tired of explorer.exe (the windows shell) sucking up all of my resources, so I went looking for an alternative. So far, Evildesk is the best one - its free and works well (except for when I have to go into Control Panel - it fires up explorer.exe and Im right back where I started from).

Anyone else here play around with alternative shells, or should I just dump windows for a version of Linux?
______________

Screw Microsoft, I say just go with Linux :) Most of the notorious compatibility issues have been resolved, and I haven't found any PC-based OS that's as stable as (or more stable than, for that matter) Linux. Of course, if you want the ultimate in stability, Mac OS is your best choice, but since no one's really been able to figure out how to port it to PC architecture, I wouldn't bother with it unless you feel like going out and buying a new Mac.
______________

I rather like the freeware DTree (based on the old XTree) from Domino Computing Systems.

A suggestion for the problem with Control Panel: You could always reboot after accessing it ... unless you're in there all the time, that's a relatively painless solution.

Windows replacements

I'm using Mozilla's FireFox and it's great.

Umm, he didn't mean Internet Explorer (the browser). He meant Windows Explorer (the shell/file manager).

Agreed, but streaming is still a problem in some cases. The Infinity stations use Windows Media Player and require IE6 on Windows and reject everything else, including Mac. NFL League Pass runs on RealPlayer but the Linux version doesn't have the login protocol built in. I still have to boot into Windows 98 in these cases, as well as some work-related ones. MLB Gameday Audio is OK under Linux.

But then I don't get viruses or spyware under Linux. I use Mandrake 10.1 and Mandriva 2005LE (aka Mandrake 10.2) on my machines. Very stable but not a speed demon (2005LE is a bit faster than 10.1), and configuring Urpmi (the package manager) with EasyUrpmi makes software updates a breeze, although other distros are just as good.

BTW, even though Apple is switching to Intel processors, I doubt seriously that OSX will ever work on generic Intel/AMD PCs. Apple keeps their hardware proprietary. New motherboards will be developed for the new Macs.

And I've used boop-boop and boop-boop blades, but I like Shick best.

Actually, some Infinity streams do work on Mac. KYOU works, WXRT (which uses the "AOL Streaming") does not. I have a WINE emulator for the Mac but I have not tried getting WMP to work on it.

You have no idea how hard I'm laughing right now. Internet Explorer is the program that is bundled with Windows. Explorer.exe is the Windows interface itself (you know - taskbar, desktop etc).

Mozilla is also bloated - but more secure and faster than IE.
______________

I just tried WSCR (I think they started today) and while I was allowed to register, the stream wouldn't start. A window pops up that says that "SoniXtream - Your computer configuration is incompatible with our audio service." It only allows Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP - No Win3.1, 95, NT, Mac, or Linux

The Radiomat.com window that shows the station list now says that it works with a Mac but requires WMP. One of them has to be right.

I get "404 Not Found". Keith, do you have Windows Media Player installed? Also i noticed FireFox will not launch the streams, however, Safari will.

Come to think of it, I like Oreos the best. Those generic store-brand sandwich cookies just never did it for me.

Although I discovered that Albertson's store-brand "oreo clones" taste just like Hydrox used to ...

I got that at first myself, but when I clicked on the WSCR icon in the Radiomat.com window, then I got the SoniXtream message in the same window that the "404 Not Found" message was in.

In any case, Infinity streams don't work with Linux.

That reminds me, I was shopping for Oreos last week and was shocked that Hydrox is no longer on the shelves. When did this happen? Admittedly, I haven't bought Oreos or Oreo clones in a good 10 years.

Sunshine (Hydrox's maker) was purchased in 1996 by Keebler.

Keebler renamed them "Droxies" and "updated" the formula not long afterwards.

The new formula bombed and bye-bye went the product line. They have been gone since 2002.

Microsoft offers a Mac version of Windows Media Player. I'm not sure if it's up to the same codec version as the Windows version, but at least it exists.
