WGUL's first billboard is up

F

FloridaBear1776

Guest
Hillsborough Avenue near Double Branch Road, facing westbound.

Pretty simple:

WGUL 860 AM TALK RADIO, WHERE YOUR OPINION COUNTS!"

No "LIBERALS HATE US!" as they have on their Miami boards.

I saw one today in the Largo area on East Bay, heading toward the beach.

Personally, I think Salem is showing a total disregard for our area by giving us more of the AM pap radio. THe old WGUL filled a void. Does anyone notice more standards on WDUV?

Salem shows total disregard for almost every area...

They have three cookie-cutter formats... Christian talk, secular talk, and the Fish for FM... and 90 percent of their stations are one of the three.

"Where your opinion counts?" It couldn't count for LESS at Salem.

More standards played on DUV

Yes, I did. I tuned in three times and I did not like what I heard. I removed 105.5 from my presets and added 104.7 in its place, then added 103.5.

Actually, the Christian talk is as much cookie-cutter as whoever sends a check. Note the airing of many quack health and money shows on a "religious" station. Salem is run by frauds.

Re: Salem shows total disregard for almost every area...

And their biggest fraud in this area is their hidden local studio in St. Pete for WLSS

Re: More standards played on DUV

Unless WDUV's playlist shown on their website is different than what is being played on-the-air, I can not see where anything has changed. They have always played a 60-era standard (e.g. 'Summer Wind' by Frank Sinatra) or a fifties-era soft pop song ('All I Have To Do Is Dream' or 'Come Softly To Me') about every other hour (close to the end of the hour). Where are you hearing more standards on WDUV now than before? I actually see more 70's and 80's music than I remember since the last time I looked at their playlist.

Re: sounds good.

I've noticed that too and like very much what I'm hearing.

Where else are you going to hear classics such as DEVOTED TO YOU by THE EVERLY BROS. The other so-caled oldies station, when it played oldies, wouldn't dare touch AN OLD SONG LIKE THAT ONE! MY GOD! IT'S A REAL OLDIE. WE CAN'T PLAY THATTT!!!

Sure. It was a "Legendary" station that kept claiming that before it launched into a Billy Joel 80s "oldie."

...Not to mention the file I have of at least 50 opinions AGAINST the switch and BEGGING for the old shows back (versus 2, yes, only two--despite what Salem claims, FOR it).
Opinion COUNTS? I got opinion counts....

Re: Salem shows total disregard for almost every area...

You know the station that is really serving their community is tiny little 1220. They only have 250 watts from a cell tower in the Mennonite community at Beneva and Bahia Vista, but they have an eclectic mix of programming, much of it paid by the hour, but still serving the community. That storefront studio on Main St. is probably expensive real estate, but sure gives them great exposure. The WLSS and WGUL Salem issues show what happens when ideology trumps good business sense and community service. But we have only ourselves to blame. The communications act of 1996 screwed up the ownership rules and really creamed local ownership. Even Clear Channel is doing a better not great, but better job of local service than WLSS is.

In Q105's defence, the original Q105 didn't exist prior to 1973. And as I read, it's pre-1973 predecessor, WPKM, was muzak.

Re: sounds good.

The point is THEY WERE SUPPOSEDLY OLDIES.

They even called themselves "legendary." Legendary means having a generally wide playlist covering the rock and roll oldies era - late 50s to early 70s. Perhaps even 1979 today, but not dissing the first half of the era, 1955-1964.

They sounded terrible as an oldies station, in terms of music selection. Billy Joel 'taint no oldie. When you start hearing more 80s crap than GENUINE oldies, you know the station is tanking.

The REAL oldies they completely ignored and gave us Gary Pucket and Sugar Sugar over and over. Makes you want to puke.

In their defense however, they weren't really much different than other cookie-cutter "oldies" stations around the country programmed by pinheads who think redefining the music is great for listeners. I tuned those jerks out.
