Have all major-company owned SJ stations (think Clear Chan.) gone to V/T?

"Where we always tell you what we play" has been gone for a long time. Now what I'm hearing is weather forcasts lopped off in mid-sentence by the traffic report, a dj talking for a minute once an hour, etc. And its on more than a few SJ outlets. Is personality SJ out the window for good?

I think WJZW 105.9 (ABC Radio) in DC has all live segments, although I could be wrong. I thought WJZZ 107.5 in Atlanta had all live personalities, however, the girl that does mid-day there, I think, also does mid-day on KOAS 105.7 in Las Vegas, go figure, lol! I think all the CC owned stations VT one segment.

Re: Automate it!

Automate the whole darn thing!

For just the reasons Jim mentioned (sloppy execution of voicetracking), I see no need to even do it at all at smooth jazz stations.

Either do it live, or have no jock whatsoever. Smooth jazz, IMO, is actually one format where total automation sounds fine, anyhow.

Forget the darn voicetracks. They sound forced and dumb. And in the rare times the VT's identify the songs, it always cracks me up when they insert it in the wrong spot and the jock is ID'ing the wrong songs.

Why bother.

Totally automate SJ stations I say! They'll be no difference in ratings, and in fact may get better.

I pretty much agree with what you are saying. The only difference is when there is a jock, and they are rare these days, that really knows the music and artist. Someone who has a knowlege and passion for the music. From what I hear the announcers are more interested in hearing themselves than taking the time to freshen things up with some song or artist info that's relevant. Sorry I'm sounding like and "old schooler" again.

Re: Automate it!

You point out the problem I was having with the WJJZ jocks. At one time there was an afternoon female dj who would talk for 3 or 4 minutes during each stop set, and be talking about nothing of interest. Knowing that her chatter would be followed by 5 minutes of commercials would drive a listener to hit the dial for another station, quickly. But a short 1 minute piece about the artist you just heard would be refreshing.
