Twin Cities TV in the 1970's?

Can somebody help me out on all this?

I must have been 5 or 6 years old when all this took place. I was in Kindergarden and First grade when my family lived in White Bear Lake. This was between 1975 and 1980(79?).

Over at
http://www.tv-ark.org.uk/international/us_minnesota.html
I found a clip of Channel 11 when they were owned by metro-media. The clips shows the MMs and the funky music and the "Metro-Media, Channel 11, 11, 11..."

The troulbe, I remember this being longer, is my memory failing me? I recall it starting full screens with 11's and M's filling the entire screen with voices saying "11, 11, 11" or something to that effect in the begining. Did that exist, or is that a false memory.

Also, remember at one time, 9 was ABC, 5 was NBC and 11 was independent. Then one fall there was this big riff between NBC and 5. (Was ABC with 5 before at one time?) At one point, 9 became independent, and 11 became "NewsCenter11" with a music package like "We got it now..." I remember Channel 11 looking just like sister WCVB 5 in Bosotn at one time. Does anyone else remember this?
Also, I recall a id on 9 that was an red or green animated antennna that curled up and became a 9 (not sure how this went).

Also, I remember WCCO always starting with the their radar and temps a few minutes before the 6 o'clock news started. AT first they had a blue 4 in a yellow circle, and then and then the colors reversed.

Finally, I remember, when the dust settled, a commical promo by Channel 4 ripping the other stations, with cartoon charcters flipping channels, and the announcer says "Remember Channel 9 was what 11 was, but then 5 became what 9 had been, and 11 is now what 9 was before..." All the while the cartoon character gets all flustered. Then the voice says "Good thing We've never channed, Channel 4, CBS Minnneapolis St. Paul" (I'm not entirely sure what he says at the end, but it was something to that effect).

Does anyone remember any of this, know the stories behind all of these, and are there any clips or tapes of any of these available anywhere?

Thanks,
Gary.

I guess it's just me, then?

Judging by the lack of reposes, I guess I AM THE ONLY PERSON WHO WATCHED TV IN MINNEAPOLIS IN THE 70'S WHO IS STILL ALIVE!

And I'm only 32...
LOL ;)

MM11 I don't know... but WUSA, KITN, and KTMA...

Sorry, can't help you there...

My earliest memory of TC TV probably is the short lived Channel 11 little jingle...

"Double-U U.... S.... A!"

Can't say I remember anything about the TCN days.

Let's see... I remember Channel 29 as "the kitten that roars." And a cheezy "K-I-T-N T-V twenty-nine.... Minnesota's Super Station!" jingle. Yeah, right.

And, another thing that stands out was the first attempt by 9 as a Fox affiliate, until they bailed not thinking the network was going to make it. My dad loved "Married With Children," and I still remember how mom hated it.

And, of course, 23 as KTMA in all is crappy glory, although I do remember watching a certain movie spoof show that seemed to do OK on cable later. And, since we didn't have cable then, once it left KTMA I had no idea it had become a success until we finally got cable later.

Thank you for indulging me in my meaningless meander down MSP TV memory lane.

Nah, that was 80's.

We left in July of 1980. There was not even one UHF channel in Minneapollis (at least nothing we could get in North St. Paul).

Fox 29, WUSA, and all those push button TV's were past my time. By then, I was watching Married with Children on Fox 25, Chronicle on NewsCenter5 and the Cosby show on WBZ 4 Eyewitness News in Boston, as I did for the rest of the 80's...

In the fall of 1978, 4-WCCO was CBS, owned by Northwest Broadcasting. 5-KSTP was NBC, owned by Stanley Hubbard 9-KMSP was ABC, owned by Chris-Craft, 11-KTCN was independent, owned by Metromedia. ABC was on a roll, the number one network with shows like Charlies Angels, The A-Team etc. ABC went to KMSP manager Bernie Schwarz and told him the network wanted them to enlarge their news department, and reduce the spot-rate the network paid for airtime. They were paying about 45% of the posted rate, they proposed 39%. Schwarz balked at expanding the news department, and said "Why give them 39% of rates, when I can sell the time and keep 100%!". So, in late '78 or early '79, KSTP dropped NBC and became ABC. KTCN built a new facility and took the NBC affiliation. KMSP became independent. They had the Twins and a bunch of re-run shows, and made more money than they had as a network affiliate. In the summer of '79, Munsters was number one in its' 3pm timeslot on 9. One by one, all the news talent left 9, including John McNichols, news director Ray Niekamp and everyone else; virtually a 100% turn-over. Hope that helps.

...one long-range effect of the network jumble of the late '70s was the fact that, now that it had a network to satisfy, WTCN/11 let Verne Gagne take the production and airing of his American Wrestling Association "All-Star Wrestling" package over to KMSP/9. Hold-by-hold commentator Rodger Kent kept making on-the-air references to "our previous location," a reference that very few fans watching in Green Bay, Chicago or Omaha ever figured out. Unfortunately, KMSP's production crew weren't up to the standards of WTCN's, and with the music video-type production KXTX/39 Dallas was applying to Fritz Von Erich's "World Class Championship Wrestling," aired in the Twin Cities on KITN/29, in the mid-'80s, Verne's show looked progressively worse and worse throughout the decade...by 1990, the AWA was done for...
______________

I thought that the A-Team was a NBC show in the 80's???

Happy Days, 3's Company, LaVerne & Shirley & Charlie's Angels were in the Top 5 for the 1977 season, while in 1978 Mork And Mindy & The Ropers were in the Top 5 along with the above mentioned L&S, HD & 3's company (5 of 5 in '78).

Does anyone remember channel 11's million dollar news team that failed to become #1 in the ratings?

I stand corrected. A team was on NBC. And 11's calls might have been WTCN, even though they were west of the Mississippi. It's been a long time and a lot of water under the bridge. I remember "News at 9", hosted by Tony Burden. Tony came in from Virginia, after getting caught with a pound of pot. They made him news director after Ray Niekamp left.

I've heard many stories about how mangled WTCN was when it was owned by Metromedia. The station improved only after Gannett purchased and took control of the station. In 1985, they flipped the calls to WUSA, then to KARE a year later when they transferred the WUSA calls to their Washington, DC station.

Metromedia left the television landscape in the mid-80's when News Corp bought their strong VHF stations (some of which were the original DuMont affiliates back in the 1950's). These stations, of course, formed the basis of the new FOX network.

As for the 'W' and 'K' calls, markets that straddle the Mississippi can use either 'W' or 'K'. And some stations a little farther in on either side are grandfathered. Radio stations in the Twin Cities, for example, have the choice of either 'W' or 'K' when they flip formats. Recent examples include 100.3 (WCTS, WBOB, WRQC, WLOL, KJZI and soon to be KTLK) and 104.1 (KJJO, KMJZ, WXPT, KZJK). Rev 105 took advantage of this in the 90's when they labeled their two station simulcast KREV (105.1) and WREV (105.3).
______________

OH MY GOODESS, I USED TO WATCH THAT AFTER SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was the Munsters, and then the Adams Family. (I think Brady Bunch was in there too?)

Channel 11's Sportscaster who was shot?

Well, I'm pretty sure it was KTCN, especially if u look at link i posted earlier.

Anyway, I recall there was a sportscaster, I think it was for 11, or maybe Channel 5, who got shot covering a story, but I can't remember the details. Does anyone know what this was about? Again, this was late 70's.

To go WAY back, does anyone remember when Ch 11 WTCN was the "Chris-Craft" station? Studios in the Calhoun Beach Hotel, Mel Jass hosting afternoon movies...

Oops, it WAS WTCN! My bad...

According to their web page: http://www.kare11.com/faq/history.aspx
they were indeed WTCN.

I would also note that WTCN is also the name for the "West Texas Cable Network," which I get here in Lubbock TX.

I miss Minnesota though. White Bear Lake to be exact, but it was a looooooooooooooooong time ago!!!!!!!!!

That would have to be the mid to late 60's. I remember many times
Mel would host a Tarzan movie. I believe Mel's catch phrase was
"Oh he has a good job" Was that when he would call people at home
for dialing for dollars ?
