No hanging chads, no recounts (and PLEASE, no anti-Jack knuckleheads 'cause this isn't for you)- just a non-scientific, informal survey to get thoughts on the Top 5 Variety/Adult Hits stations in America.

Whatever your basis is, please let us know- whether it's ratings or sound or whatever criteria.

Should be interesting-thanks in advance for contributing.

When it comes to music variety, I'm going to vote for WRZA/WKIE/WDEK "Nine FM" Chicago. They play everything.

Actually, they play anything :)

I like Nine as well, and also KCBS-FM and KKJJ. KCBS-FM has the right amount of personality and attitude through Jack that makes the station nice to listen to. KKJJ has a good variety, and the imaging seemed as if it would mirror KCBS eventually (I'd last heard KKJJ when it was a few months old).

Cogan's voice really helps the latter two stations to succeed. If you've heard the voice of WMKK, he gets incredibly annoying after the first ID or two. But Cogan is relaxed and refreshing. Nine's personalities are also interesting to listen to, and the variety on Nine cannot be beat.

You're right. Name one other station where you can hear Carly Simon and Trick Daddy on the same station.

I would have voted for 93-7 BOB-FM (WPYA) Norfolk for best imaging, but they lost Cogan last week. Now they sound terrible. So sad.

Re: Top 5 V.H. STATION

Yeah, it's a billing monster not to mention a big ratings getter. Even smaller watt sticks show up but Nine, they're reinventing radio. Glad some people like it, used to be when only a small amount people liked things the format changed, like I said, they're reinventing radio over there at Nine.

I notice that you didn't limit your pool to terrestrial radio, 'Cat, so I'll throw in my $0.02 and say that none of the JACK's -- and for sure, none of the clones (and your Nine and your Bob *are* clones; check the timeline) -- can hold a candle to the original internet JACK-FM: not for variety, not for inventiveness, not for tongue-in-cheek attitude, and not for "OMG-Gotta-Keep-Listening-Or-I'll-Miss-Something."

Trick Daddy and Carly Simon? Ha! When they get to Richard Cheese and B-T-O stiffs, we'll talk. :)

Top 5 V.H. STATION

You did say America and Canada is North America, so I pick
Jack-FM in Edmonton.

All the Jack-FM stuff(Cogan liners)with the addition of a solid morning
show. Two male hosts and a great news package delivered by a female.
I've listened alot, but I don't know any of their names.

PM drive guy is solid, too.

Jack in Edmonton streams, check it out.

I've heard Bob-FM in Norfolk and Austin. Both have DJs, but the jocks don't fit quite right. Music is Bi-Polar, huge moodswings, too wide (for me).

Jack-FM in L.A. is quite good. Has a SoCal "vibe". Lots of rock.

My bad corection for above

Its Jack-FM in Calgary that I like. Sorry.

corection

Actually, I did specify "in America". And, yes- terrestrial radio (it's what most Americans use).

Re: Variety Hits

Jack FM in Minneapolis is very good for some deep rock tracks.

98.7 The Peak in Phoenix was one of the very first Variety stations, back before the format was ever conceived or coined, and it has great personality and a very deep playlist. They'll get my vote for best in the nation though i haven't heard Nine/Chicago since last summer so Nine will get 3rd place.
Edited by saladdressing on 02/15/06 06:41 AM.

Nine FM (usually on WRZA) & WJMK Jack-FM have been the only stations I've heard so far, and prefer to listen to Nine FM. Their playlist started out narrow, due to Nine FM being an independent, but has grown quite a bit. Since Mat DuBiel took over running the station, the station now shows up in the ratings, though not up there with Jack, but that's due to being on suburban signals. Good thing Nine FM now streams on the internet. For those who don't know the link, here it is: http://www.weplayanything.com/ninefm_player.html

Why, HA HA HA, Dave? That's... Variety Hits! :)

Jack San Diego
Jack LA
NY Jack (and the online Jack.fm) tie for 3rd.
100.3 Jack FM Dallas
93.7 Mike FM

Ok, the first 4 because they were among the first big market Jacks.
The last one only because I've heard it, but I couldn't think of anything better. Mike is not a good a VH, sorry.

NINE.. They're the original, huh?

Re: Variety Hits

The Arch in St. Louis is sounding darn good...And their ratings have been showing it...#1 in the big money demos.

I think one of the reasons for thier success is that they have a pretty good jock lineup, something many of the failing VH stations are lacking in.

Variety Hits

Very true. Heard them 1-2 times and it feels like they (along with the Peak in St. Louis and Louie in Louisville) have a better flow plus their jocks are a nice compliment to their music (instead of trying to over-shadow the music product). They are clean, easy to use stations.

The Arch is doing a great job, in ratings and (apparently) revenue.

Re: Variety Hits

Regardless of what VH means to various posters...it's awesome
to see programmer's concerned and competent enough to take the
best aspects of Jack and finesse and slightly alter them to fit
their market or niches. Maybe we all can agree that this is
indeed a postive of this "format." The part that makes me wonder
(and Jack can answer this) --- as Jack's numbers ebb and flow,
can it/he/they/them take the successful points of The Arch, The
Drive, Louie, etc., and keep the freshness and momentum going?

LOUIE sounds awesome... had a awesome first book!
