The NFL is returning to Los Angeles

It has been over two decades since the last NFL game has been played in Greater Los Angeles (December 21, 1994 to be exact) but for football fans in Southland, that wait is over. The NFL owners on Tuesday night in Houston voted 30-2 to approve the relocation of the St. Louis Rams to LA, ultimately to a stadium project in Inglewood that's set to open in 2019, while also giving the San Diego Chargers a one-year option to join them.

This is the culmination of a messy process in which three clubs applied to relocation to Los Angeles in the Chargers, Rams and the Oakland Raiders. Originally, the Chargers and Raiders were aligned in a stadium project in Carson and the Chargers appeared to show little interest in joining the Rams at the Inglewood project but ultimately, the Raiders were seen as a weak link to their proposal and they backed out in order to allow this plan to pass.

As the option indicates, the Chargers are not a lock to join the Rams in Los Angeles. There will be a public vote in June regarding public funding (to the tune of $350 million) for a stadium project in San Diego and perhaps the Chargers could use the owners' vote as a way to sway the people to vote yes if seem as a last chance to keep the team in town. The team has a deadline of late March to decide whether they will play in San Diego or in Los Angeles and a deadline of January 15, 2017 to decide whether they will join the Rams, although this could be extended (and possibly allow the Raiders to take their spot).

Not a football fan but if the Rams are moving to L. A will St Louis stay with out football?

There won't be a team in St. Louis for the foreseeable future. The Raiders have already turned it down -- they're looking at San Antonio if they can't stay in the Bay Area, and their slim chance of returning to LA is pretty much gone now. The Chargers will either move to LA or stay put in San Diego, most likely the former.

St. Louis is a baseball town, with hockey as #2. It's a 3rd-level market (#21) that's already failed with two NFL teams. It likely won't be allowed a 3rd chance.

My bro-in-law, who lives just outside STL, told me years ago that when both baseball and football Cardinals were in town and you mentioned "Cardinals" you automatically meant the baseball team.

The Cards are doing much, much better here in Phoenix than they did in STL. After Sunday's win over GB Larry Fitzgerald could be elected governor tomorrow. And have you seen the latest Bruce Arians T-shirt? It's a howl (sorry, Coyotes). http://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/arizona-news/77053215-story

The Cards success has everything to do with Bowtie Bill finally realizing that he had the wrong son running things, as well as his own direct involvement making matters even worse. He wised up, shoved village idiot Bill Jr. into the background, and brought in Michael from the Federal Prosecutor's office. MIchael's connections to then-Governor Napolitano (his former boss) didn't hurt.

There was serious talk about the Cards moving to LA in the late '90s. One of the requirements was that Bidwill sell the team, which he refused. The Bidwill family was the laughingstock of the NFL at the time, and nobody wanted anything to do with them. Michael has completely turned that around.
