Danny Martinez will be joining the Station on a Weekend/Fill In/Vacation relief basis. From what I understand they are almost throwing in the Towel, and a change is inevitable. I still contend a "Rock of the 80's©" Oldies Format on KEARTH is the way to go, playing Modern Rock Oldies from the Late 70's thru the early 90's.

Interesting.
Where did the story that they are making a change come from?
And what could they be changing to?

Oh, come on, Scott. You don't have an insider track at Infinity. "From what you understand"?

We all know KRTH needs to change, but reality is that Danny Martinez sounds right for what they are doing now. Hiring him doesn't mean Infinity has wised up.

Infinity won't likely do that on KRTH because they would see it as potentially stealing listeners from co-owned KROQ. (Yes, I know that's not the case, but Weatherly would think it.)

Plus Jack is already playing a lot of those songs -- at least, the biggest ones -- and Infinity isn't going to throw in a potential listener-stealer from that, so soon after the launch.

Your contention makes sense to me, but it isn't going to be KRTH.

I disagree. If it was Alternative in nature, it would likely impact KROQ's upper end.

If you look at the era map on KCBS-FM, almost 70% of the music comes from 1978-1992. There's no reason to sign on another station in the rock/alternative genre that covers that era.

Just a Staffing addition for now...

Danny Martinez can sound great when he wants to. As far as their other problem, doing the Limbo Rock (how Low can you go?), this now from a KRTH Insider who said Sean Hamilton would take the Market by Storm, "Hollywood Hamilton's morning numbers are atrocious. His 25 to 54 demo has almost disappeared.... Now that's pathetic....we'll see if he continues to slide or maybe just the old listeners are going away and he's gathering some new ones....doubt it, though".

Edited by moderator to remove Arbitron ratings per R-I rules. You know better, Scott.
Edited by KMRichards on 06/13/05 03:16 PM.

Re: Just a Staffing addition for now...

Hi ya:
Danny M. worked both oldies and classic rock format. If my information is right he worked for KRTH 101.1 in the past, and also worked for KCBS 93.1 during their classic rock years. I don't believe KRTH is changing format at of right now. If they did, what format would they take up? Reincarnate Arrow into Arrow 101.1, Classic Rock, 80s oldies, Los Angeles talk radio (like New Jersey 101.5), its hard too say since these formats have been used or are being used in the Los Angeles market.

I believe WCBS-FM Oldies in NY fell victim too what KCBS-FM oldies fell victim too in Los Angeles when Arrow 93 came bouncing in with large listening approval (for its early years), and later what Arrow 93 fell victim too with Jack-FM. A new format, a rising format, new decade coverage, on a frequency that's established & on call letters that established, and killing a format that just happened to be in the way. I personally (just personally though) dont believe KRTH 101 will be going anywhere soon. If they were too change format they might have already done so...Infintiy could of easily killed off KRTH 101 and made it the Jack-FM station and left Arrow 93 as it was. The promotion would of been interesting being they could of had Jack-FM 101.1 in NY and Jack-FM 101.1 in LA. On a interesting note both CBS-FM's are now Jack-FM. K-CBS & W-CBS, which makes a great marketing coverage..."We play what we want from Los Angeles too New York". CBS made their best move when they ditched call letter ODJ for CBS in 1991. This is the first time both CBS's had the same format on their "CBS-FM" call letters since 1993 when WCBS-FM 101.1 was Oldies and KCBS-FM 93.1 was "Oldies 93"

Huh? Who cares about New York, this is Los Angeles. What Jack Los Angeles proved to the suits was that it was going to hurt their oldies stations (and fill them with younger money demos if they killed them). That is why they killed off WCBS-FM and not Mix (WNEW).
They already know it's hurting K-Earth. K-Earth won't last and one reason is their own station is sucking away its younger demos.

As for Danny Martinez, K-Earth fired most of its bloated weekend and split overnight staff and this isn't much of an addition.

Re: Just a Staffing addition for now...

Danny Martinez is one of the better jocks in LA.

I used to listen to Danny when I was in High school in NY on WXLO. Then we took a summer family vacation to LA. And when I turned on KHJ,guess who was on? Good old Danny. Super nice guy. Best of luck to him.

He's worked at so many places, nowhere does he list WXLO

nor the Radio Net that we worked at, but yes he was with Drake in New York too.

Martinez, Danny: KHJ, 1973-75; KKDJ, 1975; KIIS, 1975-76; KFI, 1977-78; KWIZ, 1979; KHJ, 1980-85; KBZT, 1986; KRLA, 1986; KTWV, 1988; KRTH, 1990-92; KCBS, 1992-93; KYSR, 1993-95; KCBS, 1996-2005. Danny works swing at "Arrow 93."

Danny did work at XLO in 1973 prior to KHJ. I think he did 9-mid. Brian White was 6-9p. I believe. Danny told me that in those days 'XLO was considered a training ground for stations like KHJ even though it was a larger market.
