https://radioinsight.com/headlines/180819/sheriff-darren-white-joins-kkob-albuquerque/

Starts October 7th.

Cumulus Media News/Talk 770 KKOB Albuquerque/94.5 K233CG Sandia NM has announced the addition of Sheriff Darren White to host a 1-3pm show starting Monday, October 7.

White served as Bernalillo County Sheriff from 2003-2009 and Secretary of New Mexico Department of Public Safety and Albuquerque Chief Public Safety Officer. He fills the opening created by the exit of former KKOB Program Director Pat Frisch, who hosted in the 1-3pm timeslot until his departure in June.

Radio stations sometimes give shows to non-radio people who might otherwise have name recognition. But how often does that succeed? Going from law enforcement to media personality might be quite a challenge. His show will likely center on topics of crime and punishment but can he keep an audience interested?

It's all about the program director who has to be a skilled coach and direct non-radio people.

Some years ago I recruited a priest, lawyers in three different specialties, two different kinds of doctors, a psychiatrist, a psychologist... and a cop to do Saturday and Sunday on an LA station. We were the only US talk station to perform better on weekends than on weekdays!

So the real issue is whether the PD is a good trainer.
