You would think with Radio One touting they're the "Urban Media Specialists" that they would own a jazz station, but they don't. They do own at least two Smooth Jazz stations though. Indianapolis and Atlanta. But despite Radio One's blackness, the Smooth Jazz stations are no more soulful than the ones owned by non-black broadcasters. I think they defer their programming to the consultants that do the other stations. Hopefully RO is resourceful enough to form some kind of a "soul-jazz" format to complement their urban formats. It would be great to hear Roy Ayers, Mike Phillips, Roots, Phildadelphia/Detroit Experiment, Cannonball Adderly, Young-Holt Unlimited, Eddie Harris, Lonnie Liston Smith, Earl Klugh...on and on. And even songs like "Stop, Look, Listen" and "People Make The World Go Round" by the Stylistics in addition to or in place of the remakes. Even crossover R&B like "K-Jee" by the Nite-Liters and "I Likes To Do It" by People's Choice could help do the trick along with all the new neo-soul artists out there making great music for all. You would think there are enough 25-34 and 35-54 age groups to take this in.
