Radio 2 spin-off among four new stations planned by BBC

The Radio 1 spin-off will focus on music from the 2000s and 2010s, catering to the appetite from young audiences for recent nostalgia.

The Radio 2 spin-off will provide "a distinctive take on pop nostalgia" from the 50s, 60s and 70s, the BBC said, and will feature "some of the people who shaped the cultural landscape at the time" as well as some of the station's current presenters.

Radio 3 will also get a new station to focus on calming classical music, aimed at helping listeners "unwind, de-stress and escape the pressures of daily life".

Finally, the existing Radio 1 Dance station, currently available as a stream on BBC Sounds, will launch on DAB+ with new and enhanced content.

Plans also include the BBC turning 5 Live Sports Extra, only on air occasionally to air live sport when 5 Live isn't doing sport or airing another sporting event, into a full time DAB sports station (kinda) using doing non-live sport content from there podcasts as well as sport programming airing on BBC Radio across the UK. It's interesting seeing the Beeb being so bullish & all about radio when at this time, they're also cutting back on stuff on the television side which has been the gripe of many across the pond because ppl there pay the BBC via the Licence Fee & many feel they're not getting value for money & that's on top of paying for cable/satellite which we can all relate here Stateside.

The Radio 2 spinoff looks like a targeted strike against Boom Radio. It will be interesting to hear which well-known personalities from the Beeb's past (or maybe even from pirates) get jobs there, and whether they'll be doing live shows.

I'm less enthusiastic about the Radio 3 spinoff. The description hints more at an "easy listening" dumbed-down version of classical music than a true complement to Radio 3. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if the more "accessible" music of the spinoff eventually becomes the main format of Radio 3, with offerings for the classical music faithful relegated to the sub-network.
