R.I.P. Dana Key

I haven't been able to find out any details on the web, but Dana Key of DeGarmo and Key, probably the best known band in Christian rock from Memphis, passed away last night. There were mentions of it on K-LOVE and WCRV this morning, but no details yet.

It appears Dana died from a blood clot. He did a reunion concert with Eddie DeGarmo at Dana's TLC Church a couple of years back. I wanted to go but wasn't able to. They also did a reunion concert last week in Asheville, NC. It's ironic that for years D&K were better known outside of Memphis than in Memphis.

Here are the articles from The Commercial Appeal and CCM Magazine:

I took one of their albums in to my PD at 103 at the time, (this was probably when they were in hot rotation on MTV) and he told me he didn't want to play music that preached. I left the office thinking, but what we play DOES preach...

I remember in the early 80's that 103 had a Christian rock show called Josiah Reign with Rick Miller that definitely played D&K IIRC. I used to listen to it regularly until it was dropped during the Z103 period. I remember calling and asking why it was dropped and was told that it supposedly "didn't fit the format." Never mind that it was replaced with a talk show that fit the format even less. To me this was one of 103's worst decisions. I know that it would have probably been dropped eventually no matter what, but it deserved to last longer than it did.

This was in the post-Z-103 era. Tom Owens, Beard, and Rivers were supportive of Rick's show.
