A 12-year-old German boy who insisted he was a girl trapped in a boy's body convinced his parents that something had to be done, so they agreed to allow him to receive a series of hormone injections, making him the youngest sex-change patient in the world, according to published reports Monday.

Now 14, the boy, who went by the name Tim, has now become Kim – a blue-eyed blonde with a growing bust line who is allowed to wear make-up at weekends.

Kim has no boyfriends at present but her parents say she is interested in what, now, is the opposite sex.

Her treatment, which has cost more than $40,000, is being funded by German taxpayers.

welll....12 is a bit too young to make those kind of life-altering decisions, but if the parents were looking for press they certainly got it. Perhaps a little counseling till he turned 18 would've been in order...

Oh, really? I thought people like that were born that way, and not the result of any later decision/influence. Another myth debunked. Thanks Var for clearing that up.

Worrisome....

At 12, yeah....but to wait to 18 might be a little long, allowing some serious psychological damage to build up. But who is to say whether 14 or 16 or some other point might ensure certainty while holding down the mental trauma.

As to the "born that way" argument, if that's accepted there's still the burden of the decision whether to face the dangers of the surgery involved and the social stigma vs. simply holding the pain inside. I believe the decision has as much to do with those factors as with the one on which the discussion centers.

A decision for which I am glad to have had no participation!

Hard to see, though, legitimacy in government funding.

Yet it is precisely these kinds of procedures that manage to find their way into every government-run universal health care system. You know that idea, the one now supported by no less than 3 of the Democratic presidential contenders including Clinton and Obama. As far as coming up with the extra tax revenue to pay for such operations, well, as Hillary likes to say: "It takes a pillage"
