Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

YouTube people:
Just letting you know that I have two strikes now for Martha Stewart. Almost everything from the old run was taken down by MSL Omnimedia...who owns her magazine. Shows that are 20 years old and not in reruns taken down, YEARS after uploading. Sad!
One more and I lose 6,800 videos. Thank god everything is up on Amazon Drive, but not everything from the old channel...like the first 200 videos or so.

What were the first 200 videos that got taken down that you no longer have archived?

I remember a few years ago, at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds flea market that's held every weekend during the warm weather months, I picked up a tape (a JVC T-120) that had the same issue as your Tape 2 with the tape being all chewed up at the beginning. I haven't converted much of it yet. For the most part, it's a random mishmash of various cable programs (a lot of them incomplete) taped from a DirecTV receiver in September 2007, with a lot of channel flipping throughout. Various programs from MTV2 (Sucker Free, Wild N Out), BET (BET Live, Rap City, 106 & Park, Booty Call [1997 film]), Disney Channel (That's So Raven and maybe something else), Nickelodeon (Drake and Josh), etc. I think they also recorded one or two songs from one of the hip-hop stations on XM Satellite Radio when DirecTV simulcast many of the commercial-free music stations from that service. Of all the music videos that were found on the tape, the only one I really recognized was "Crank That Soulja Boy" and I think that was the part of the tape that was the most damaged.

No finds on my end this week. I did hit a couple of estate sales within the last couple of days, but the only home-recorded tapes I spotted at those sales were family home movies and obviously not for sale.

I found out there used to be a thrift store in Parma Heights called Thrift Nation that apparently sold recorded VHS tapes according to one of the reviews of it I read on Yelp. Unfortunately, it closed in 2014. A shame, too, because nowadays I'm in that Cleveland suburb on a regular basis anyway DJing for an Internet radio station in that area every week.

Have you come across any tapes with old Game Show network shows like lingo whammy from 2003-2009.

E
Tape 4 - 'A League of Their Own' (1992) taped off HBO 8/7/1993 with promos prior to the movie; then a partial scrambled video/clear audio broadcast of the Pazienza-Honeyghan fight and Holyfield-Stewart taped off Viewer's Choice PPV on 6/26/1993;

I remember watching Leonard vs. Hagler that way! That primitive scrambling with the audio in the clear wasn't terribly effective.

I personally recorded a few episodes of As Seen On on GSN back in 2000, some have commercials, most do not. I also have a partial episode of The $100,000 Pyramid taped from GSN the same year. The only other GSN recording I have has partial episodes of Wheel of Fortune and Card Sharks taped in 2008, from a VHS lot I bought from an eBay seller in Brownwood, Texas.

Do you know any good consistent ebay sellers of vhs tapes by chance? The thing is you never fully know what your getting with ebay and it helps if you know the seller your buying from.

On Wednesday, after I was finished with my weekly radio gig, I stopped by the Value World thrift store in Middleburg Heights and actually spotted and picked up six VHS tapes. Most didn't have labels. One was erased, two were blank, and one was a dud, but here's what I found on the other two.

TAPE 1: Partial episode of The Simpsons taped from WJW on 2/22/1998 with a few commercials; partial episode of King of the Hill taped from WJW on 3/8/1998 with commercials; episode of Real TV taped from WJW on 3/18/1998 with commercials; episode of NYPD Blue and first few minutes of News Channel 5 at 11 taped from WEWS on 3/17/1998 with commercials; most of another episode of Real TV taped from WJW on 3/16/1998 with commercials; episode of America's Funniest Home Videos and start of 20/20 taped from WEWS on 3/16/1998 with commercials; partially taped-over episode of NYPD Blue and start of News Channel 5 at 11 taped from WEWS on 3/9/1998 with commercials; another partially taped-over episode of NYPD Blue and first few minutes of News Channel 5 at 11 taped from WEWS on 1/20/1998 with commercials; most of another episode of NYPD Blue and start of News Channel 5 at 11 taped from WEWS on 11/11/1997 with commercials. RCA T-120.

TAPE 2: Broadcast of Fox 8 News at Ten taped from WJW on 8/22/2005 with commercials; most of another broadcast of Fox 8 News at Ten taped from WJW on 9/7/2005 with commercials; episode of Medium taped from WKYC on 9/19/2005 with commercials; episode of NCIS taped from WOIO on 9/20/2005 with commercials; episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit taped from WKYC on 9/20/2005 with commercials; pilot episode of E-Ring taped from WKYC on 9/21/2005 with commercials. Polaroid T-120.

Also picked up two used blank audiocassettes from a small box of them near the front of the store, but haven't listened to either of them yet. One was labeled "DWTV English"--audio from the DW-TV network recorded onto a cassette?

The dud tape had the movies Midnight Lace (1960) and The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) taped from unknown channels. I looked at very little of the tape before I opted to toss it because of the squealing sound the tape made while fast-forwarding.

Not a lot of finds this past weekend, this was all I could come up with:

One other tape was a dud, no commercials.

Was the sale like a yard sale at a private school or was the school itself selling its inventory?

Donations from families that have children going to the private school (which is Yakima Adventist Christian School if you're wondering). Huge sale overall. Tons of furniture, aisles worth of clothes, huge Christmas and Halloween decoration area, boxes of books (mix of children's and adult fiction/non-fiction), some kitchen stuff. Only thing they were missing was electronics. I think there was one VCR and one DVD player for sale. No televisions, radios or anything like that.

Multiple yard sales today resulted in no other tapes.

On Saturday I drove nearly an hour and a half from home to an estate sale in Kennewick. This was on the south side of Kennewick, near I-82. I picked up over 40 tapes for about a nickel a piece!! How do you find out about these estate sales id be interested in checking some out as i have an interest in old vhs and radio broadcasts?

Kindergarten Cop on Tape 2 was likely taped from NBC if it was taped in 1992. That's when the movie made its network TV premiere.

Little off-topic, but last week, I went on a charter bus trip to South Dakota. Stopped at several different attractions along the way there and back with the biggest highlights being Mount Rushmore and the Badlands. I bring this up here because the part of the country where I was has a lot of TV markets that are much smaller on the Nielsen scale than my home market of Cleveland, markets that are not always the easiest to find footage from on YouTube. The stopover on the first night was just outside Davenport, Iowa (the Quad Cities), which is market #108. Second night was in Sioux City, Iowa, market #152. Then two nights in Rapid City, market #174. Last two overnight stopovers were in Fairmont, Minnesota, which picks up stations in Minneapolis/St. Paul (#16) and the much smaller market of Mankato (#201) and then Madison, Wisconsin (#84).

Now to peruse eBay for VHS lots located within any of those markets, including the ones we drove through without stopping. Only listing from Rapid City I found is a two-tape set, one of which has Seinfeld episodes. There was a 36-tape lot from Goshen, Indiana (South Bend) available earlier, but the seller ended the listing just yesterday without the lot ever being sold. Supposedly had such contents as Oprah episodes, President Bush's 2003 State of the Union Address, a WSBT special on the blizzard of 1978, Christy episodes, George W. Bush's 2001 inauguration, The Elizabeth Smart Story (CBS made-for-TV movie), etc.

Do you have the link for that goshen listing? And how do you know someone didnt buy it now or offer the seller a price for them through private message and thats why the listing was taken down as this frequently happens.
