Obit: Frank Benton 106.7, QX-FM, and ADOLPH on Slam Bang Theater

Frank M Benton Jr. died May 4 at age 79. I missed the obit in the Star Telegram but I
looked it up online and there was no mention that he played "Adolph" on Icky
Twerp's Slam Bang Theater on Channel 11 from about 1959-64 and then on a
Channel 33 Summer revival about 25 years ago. In the between time he was an
Air Force captain with Armed Forces Radio-TV providing programming and
services to US troops in SE Asia. Later he was music director of KCYT 106.7
FM in Granbury and the QX-FM stations in Weatherford and Springtown.

Until he became ill about a year ago, he ran a small radio commercial
production facility out of his home -- I believe he did it just for the fun
of being in radio, as he never charged me for some radio spots that he made
for a coin store that I managed in the 1990s.

A very young Benton appears as the manager of the "Toemain Palace"
restaurant at the 2 minute mark in the 1960 Icky Twerp sketch

RIP

Frank was an interesting guy, and a good friend. He was my mentor in the early days of KZQX-LP, which was one of the first LPFM stations in Texas. His help was invaluable in making it a success. These days, it has evolved into a Class A commercial FM, but I've never forgotten the advice Frank gave me. He will be missed.
