Necrology: Lloyd Thaxton, 81

I find it somewhat odd that while posts regarding the passing of Lloyd Thaxton are in several categories at R-I, none have been posted here, which may be the most apropos place for one.

Lloyd Thaxton's popular dance show began on L.A.'s KCOP-13 in 1962. It immediately won it's daily afternoon time slot, and was syndicated nationally in 1964. Some of the biggest names in pop music appeared on his program.

A DVD of his show is in production. Mr. Thaxton was working on it up to just prior to his passing.

A much more thorough obituary can be found here:

Condolences to Lloyd's widow Barbara can be sent here:

There is little I can add except to say that he was truly one of a kind.

As I typed on his blog (in memory).... "P.I.P." Not R.I.P.!!! "Party In Peace" you crazy guy! I wonder if there are any 'twist boards' in Heaven???? ;) From a 'kid' that loved your show and used your influence in his media work...

I remember watching "The Lloyd Thaxton Show" back in 1966-67 faithfully. We were able to get the show in the Boston area on WSBK-TV/Channel 38 every night. It also was seen on WTEV/Channel 6 in New Bedford (now WLNE). I loved the unique parody style of Lloyd Thaxton and the pre-karaoke days of voice overs of the songs. I also remember his days as a game show host of "Funny You Should Ask" in 1969 on ABC. The last time I saw Mr. Thaxton on TV was while I was visiting Phoenix, he did a local show for while, back in the 80's. What Dick Clark was for Philly, I'm sure people felt that Lloyd Thaxton was to L.A. .

Even my oldest brother mentioned about Lloyd Thaxton not too long ago. Well...... for Mr. Thaxton, RIP.

Wow...Thaxton brings back memories...guess what gang? WTEV-6 PROVIDENCE (longsince changed to WLNE) aired the Lloyd Thaxton show and was a big hit at our house. I was just about to enter my teens at the time, also being a big fan of American Bandstand and Soul Train (later). A few people were the big encouragers of my broadcast career, and Lloyd Thaxton's presence and uniqueness definitely molded it for me. So good to know that southern New England wasn't out of step with the hippest folks from greater LA back then...
