Music Station under WABC?

While my mom was doing groceries this evening I was sitting in the car playing with the radio. I landed on 770 WABC. I could hear weak station playing music underneath it, but it couldn't override WABC. What station was this?

Couldn't have been 740 could it? AM740 Toronto comes in nearly local here in Hartford at night, old music all night. I listen to it before bed sometimes.

But if you were on a digital tuner, I'm probably way off.

Mmm... even on an analogue tuner, I doubt 740 would be coming in so powerfully as to be heard under WABC (a 30kHz difference). It's not entirely impossible, but from that distance, I doubt it'd be very likely.

Since you don't specify what type of music, I don't know how to narrow this down.

Music-based 770s active after sunset:

KAAM-Garland, TX (MoYL, I've heard this one before)
KATL-Miles City, MT(Hot AC)
KJCB-Lafayette, LA(urban, heard it)

Most daytimers in the Central/Mountain/Pacific time zones would have still been on, too, which makes these stations possible:

WEW-St. Louis(a brokered station that plays polka and Bosnian music on Sunday afternoons, heard it)
KUOM-Minneapolis(college station that simulcasts an FM, no schedule available, but I'd bet they have music programming of some kind.)
WYHG-Young Harris, GA(full-service block-programmed station, SoGos/bluegrass on weekends, I get it via groundwave occasionally)
WTOR-Youngstown, NY(ethnic station aimed at Toronto, apparently plays Pakistani/Indian music)

The last one probably makes the most sense in Connecticut. The only Canadian 770 is a talker in Calgary and puts a null towards the US to protect KATL.

Is it possible you were near the tower of a local station and the strong signal was bleeding onto 770? For instance, I was listening to WLW in Chillicothe Ohio (about 100 miles from their tower) which normally sounds like a local day and night, and was hearing a talk station under them. Upon furthur investigation, I realized the tower for WBEX at 1490 was a few hundred feet away and the audio was bleeding over to 700.

WTVB 1590 (A 1kw nighttime station) isn't even audible 30kHz down the dial at 1560. And i'm two miles away from their tower site.

Even the strongest 'clear channel' stations don't bleed over that bad in my location.

There is a very slight chance it could have been WAIS 770 in Buchtel, Ohio (Athens County) about 50-70 miles from Columbus..If they stayed on the air that late which is doubtful..They play Country Music

Sounded like Urban AC or Soft AC. Guess its just that time of the year. Winter is always good for AM DX.
______________

I'll give you 5 reasons why it couldn't have been a local station bleeding.

1. The only AM station licensed to Southington is on 990 and broadcasts with 80 watts at night.

2. There are no stations in Connecticut on AM between 700 and 790.

3. The above mentioned 990 AM is a talk station. Talk Radio 990 WXCT

4. The above mentioned 990's tower is more than 5 miles from Shaw's.

And 5. The above mentioned 990 barely comes in at Shaws at night.

I wonder what WTVB's trick is. I get WCSR between 1190 and 1640 24/7! Gotta be that torn-up ground system :)
______________
