"Mighty" 1190 is no more

They're playing some genre of country music that I'm not even familiar with, but I believe it's that redneck garbage that Young Country used to play in the 1990s (God forbid it'd be programmed with classic country.) Haven't heard any ID's, promos, etc, but what a waste, having spent so much on all that Mighty dumb custom imaging.

Yeah, that was just too good for too long. Something palatable with no commercials.

1160 carries on, however, with R&B oldies (for now, at least.)

Yeah, it's classic country, but with some fairly new ones thrown in (in the 20 minutes that I tried to listen this morning, I heard Johnny Cash ("Ring Of Fire"), Bellamy Brothers, George Jones ("He Stopped Loving Her Today", a classic country song if you've ever heard one), Gene Watson, and a newer Brooks & Dunn ("Play Somethin' Country") and Dwight Yoakam. It sounds like their new country format is going to be kind of a mish-mash, like the old rock 'n' rolldies format was.

At the tail end of "Play Somethin' Country," the traffic report barged in...before the song was finished. I guess their computer isn't ready to handle C&W yet.

Time to change the preset on my car radio again, I guess.
______________

Is this going to be a Hank FM type format or Willie type format??

Yep - another dead spot on the dial. When every station is country, talk, Spanish, or hip-hop, I'll give up radio.

For sure!

Leave it to First Loosers to screw 1190 up again. What a pathetic bunch of loosers posers for broadcasters. First "Broadcasting", you suck, as usual.
______________

It sounds like a clone of ABC's "Real Country Format".

Have we forgotten that 1190 was country for a few years in the early 80's?

> but I believe it's that redneck garbage

Young Counry was actually quite cutting edge as far as the music went, much more interesting than the mainstream country outlets.

> (God forbid it'd be programmed with classic country.)

Classic Country has worked very well on a rimshot FM here in Houston (Country Legends 97.1.) I think the format would do reasonably well in DFW but I don't think AM is the place for it. The Twister would be smart to go this route.

They should have gone IBOC. Everybody knows IBOC saves radio stations and is the answer to ratings on music AM's. And it will blow up all the satellite receivers, flowers will spring up everywhere, the skies turn blue, and happy elves dance everywhere. Oh - let me blissfully dance down to the electronics store where I will gratefully shell out $300 for my new IBOC radio!

You know, if someone ever really did a Country Gold format the right way around here...

Man, I'd listen to that.

Right, a well imaged, well promoted, veteran jocked Country Gold format on a strong 100K FM stick would do well in Dallas. But gutless corporate broadcasters who take adivice from out of town "yankee consultants" too seriously don't have the balls and skills to put this kind of station on the air in DFW. Same with Active Rock. Eagle was doing fine until Jacor/CC bought it and destroyed it.

I was never impressed with Mighty's unfocused oldies format. Just toss a random bunch of hits on a computer and let it run jock-free. Thats fine for XM-Sirus and the internet but not for "real radio". Dont promote it either and watch a 50K daytime powerhouse get 0.0 ratings. I didnt expect it to last long and it didn't. Same with Classic Country.

KFTI/Wichita (was Re: "Mighty" 1190 is no more)

Now recalling high points from a discussion from
a few months ago...

- Have you ever heard KFTI/1070 (was KFDI) in Wichita, KS?

As much as I tend to button-push and DX when driving
through out-of-town markets, this is one station I lock
into for hours when heading through Kansas. In particular,
the midday personality, Johnny Western, is just that, a
true personality.

It's format is hard-core classic country and real western
(cowboy) music. Even if you don't like that genre, the live
ad-lib spots are priceless.

Mostly, I agree. None of the carpetbagger GM's and PD's in this market realize how friggin' successful Classic Country would be on FM. Notice how badly they were blind-sided by Spanish FM a few years back? Talk about a demo that's been under-served for years!!!

But back to Classic Country... ClearChannel owns KVET-FM in Austin, so CC could easily bring the blueprint to DFW.

If somone had the $$$ to buy 1190 - and put a station like that, serving the rual area outside of the metroplex, playing a lot of Classic C&W I think 1190 would do well even with that poor night signal.

KFTI (why did those morons at Journal change those classic calls?) is a great radio station. Thankfully the staff has stuck together and kept Journal from budget cutting it into a shell of itself, unlike it's former Great Empire cousin stations KVOO-AM (now KFAQ) and KWKH.

You people!!!

I honestly hadn't heard 1190 was going to flip - got in the truck this morning headed to work and heard it. I never knew there were so many people in TEXAS that despised country music. Why don't you move to Minnesota or New York or something?

I'm probably not in their demo, but I actually like the format. Beats KSCS only playing classic country on Saturday nights - and this still has no commercials.

After a few phone calls I figured out why they did what they did - but I'm sure nobody here would care anyway.

Hey, Mighty - you still have at least one listener! :)

Not me, Jody! Country music was always so repugnant to me, I became an advanced DX'er and engineer at an early age to avoid it. One of the stations I DX'ed was YOURS - in its first incarnation as KNUS (look towards the bottom):

http://www.mindspring.com/~brucec/bg.htm

I successfully listened to Dallas FM from Midland, TX and Lubbock, TX for years, before ending up here. And I never, ever became a fan of country music in any form.

Re: You people!!!

Hillbilly music sucked when I was a kid - it still sucks! Although not as bad as hate speech hip-hop!

I WILL agree with you on the hip-hop stuff... but c'mon - country is TEXAS...

*starts singing about a truck, jail, being drunk, mamma, etc*

It all sucks!!! Now, can we stop the SUCKING, grow up, and get on with our lives?....

But Country music is just as negative as hip hop, so is you are going to HATE, hate both.

The demos are probably cored at 75+...but, based on the R&R
12+ numbers, KFDI (err...KF*T*I) has a respectable 12+ share
in Wichita.
