Magic 949 and other commentary

Hey Hey Tampa Bay,

I haven't heard Magic 94-9 in a long time, I do listen to it alot when I'm in Tampa Bay. I do like the mix of soft rock/lite rock or what ever you wanna call it but I must say that when I've been in the bay area Magic sounded boring in the sense that they didnt use jingles or any kind of cool AC imging, at least not when I was in Tampa back in 04. I was wondering, with all the great AC jingle packages coming out such as realworlds new WLIT package and their highly successful WNIC and WJXA packages out, has Magic jumped on the bandwagon and refreshed their sound or is Magic still Jingleless, as I recall they didnt even have sounders or beds for their news traffic or weather but if they had jingles they would have all of the above. Has Magic brightened up a bit or is it good music, boring sound like Cox's co owned Mix 103-7 (WMXB Richmond VA. wich needs an image makeover BAD) I was wondering, has Magic re imaged or are they still kinda boring? Just a note to Magic Program directors if you havent used jingles the reelworld packages I mentioned above would really do great on the station. TM Century has just released a package called "KVIL Signature" that may work well. On a final note I remember Cox did use Reelworld's "windy 100" package and later iccorporated some Jingles from thompson creative that made for and awesome combination of sound and style back in the Jo 101.5 days, the old Jo imgaging still sticks in my mind today :) GREAT STUFF reelwaorld is my favorite jingle company.

No COX station in Tampa uses any imaging . Format doesn't matter.

Been awhile since I listened to it at length, but I think they are still "#1 at work".

"It's a Shame What Happened to Radio"

94.9 in one word: B O R I N G

I got on the internet and listened to some old airchecks from KVIL in Dallas from the 1980s. I only heard them a few times, but actually got a tour of their studio in the early 80s. What a great AC radio station. The airchecks I heard, took music similar to today's 94.9 in Tampa and used talented personalities, great jingles, and promotions. The DJ's pushed the format along throughout the day and you just wanted to keep listening, even through a newscast of long spot break. KVIL was one of the first and only stations I ever knew to use "morning show quality talent" in middays and afternoon drive.

Go to this page and go to the bottom and listen to the KVIL collection. If you love jingles, you've got to listen to the "It's a Shame What Happened to Radio" jingle near the bottom of the page. They take a knock at once might KLIF which had fallen on hard times after KVIL became a power in the late 1970s. KVIL was known to produce 30/60 second jingles and just use them a few times for some special event or promotion. Enjoy.

I tuned in, but YNF isn't there anymore. Ever since that day, 94.9 might as well just air static 24-7-365. It's sad... just really, really sad. If there is a rock and roll heaven, there will only be one memory button on every radio there, and it will be tuned to 95 YNF, Tampa Bay's home of Rock and Roll!

(Living in a dream world. Living in the past. I know... get over it, Punkin!)

Sorry.

I didn't live here to hear YNF, but it sure must have been great. Personally, I like WWRM because it new and number one at work. Those are compelling reasons.

You're kidding, right? The fact that it was "new" and "#1 at work" -- rammed in our ears the last few years -- is a reason not to tune in.

Even their promotions are on the lame side -- a couple of years ago, my uncle, who was visiting from Michigan, took me to an auto parts store to get a replacement car battery for my car. All the way there I listened to 949's morning show, inwhich they had a Survivor-style contest, where contestant have to tell if they're eating a piece of meat from a Banquet frozen entree, or a fried critter. each winner got a free Banquet entree, and I think each contestant won. It reeked like an extended commercial for Banquet. I practically wished that my unc would change the station (I never had the nerve to say so).

Same reasons I love B-95.5 in Atlanta and B-103 in Richmond. Same clever COX liners. Actually, I think the best sounding AC in this area is WWRZ. It should be in the big city. It is so much better than WDUV, WWRM, or WMTX it just meses my little brain.

It WAS great, up until its final year of existance. In 1992 to mid '93 they lost Ron & Ron while PD Charlie Logan foolishly blew off the adult rock audience and skewed younger to compete with 98 Rock.

Tampa Bay had no adult rock station at the time, unless you counted "The Point 102.5" playing America and Richard Marx.

...and don't forget, 94.9 is all Delilah, all the freaking time (or at least it seems that way).
