KROQ's horrible ratings

The irony is that when CC converted KYSR to the Alt format, the presumed internal expectations were not particularly high. The thinking went that if they could just take some marginal audience away from KROQ, they would cement their CC FM cluster over the CBS FM, cluster, at which they basically succeeded

Remember that KYSR started as an Alternative AC in the period of the mid-90's when there was a lot of fairly mellow alternative. That's where Seacrest landed in LA, and the station was a good fit in the early Clear Channel cluster.

Just saw this statement on All Access from Mike Kaplan:

PD MIKE KAPLAN said, “Similar to ALT 98.7 dethroning the legendary KROQ last year, THE WOODY SHOW’s ascension in the ratings have now also reached a new milestone -- they are the #1 most listened to morning show in LOS ANGELES among 18-34 adults. It’s a monumental shift in the tastes of L.A. radio listening, as fans have voted for a morning show that’s authentic, unapologetically themselves, and obsessively entertaining.”

Is this true? If so, this is looking better for KYSR than they could have imaged.

Interesting that the Woody show is so successful in LA. It failed in SF. Another example of the differences in taste between the two markets.

Or the skillset in training and airchecking by the individual PDs.

No, it is not true.

#1 in persons 18-34 in the September book in 6 AM to 10 AM is the Omar & Argelia show on KLVE, which is 0.4 ahead of KYSR.

But are they number one among English stations in the otherwise same demos? I highly doubt they are actively competing against the morning show of the top Spanish language station in town. I am sure your correction is accurate as it pertains to the original question which made no such distinction, but in this case it is not relevant to what they are trying to accomplish. If they are #1 English persons 18-34 in the #2 market in the country, that is certainly an accomplishment, especially given the entrenched big name competition.

In a market that is approaching 45% Hispanic where over half of those Hispanics are English dominant or bilingual, there is considerable sharing between KYSR and KLVE.

And all stations compete for the available revenue.

But this is a market where advertisers look at rankers for all stations for a large percentage of buys. And those rankers show KLVE ahead of KYSR.

LARadio.com reported that the Woody Show is #1 with 18-34 year olds. Any confirmation on this?

Also interesting, Kevin and Bean are nowhere to be found in the Top 5 in 12+, 18-34 or 25-54.

Nothing new. They have been #1 or #2 in 18-34 since March.

I see that iHeart has recently begun syndicating the show to some stations, including an alternative station in St. Louis. Probably more to come next year.
