KLUV killed Ricky Nelson

OK, maybe not exactly. But it's been TWENTY years ago Saturday night since Nelson's plane went down in DeKalb, TX while en route to KLUV's New Years Eve Sock Hop (hosted by the late Hubcap Carter.) I remember Channel 4 doing a nice impromptu tribute to Nelson that night, taking the cameras down to KLUV's old studios at the Merchants Bank building on Ross and Henderson, and interviewing (the late) Al Forguson, who was jocking that night.

Wow...that was 20 years ago? I was 9 at the time and vividly remember the whole thing unfold on television.

Hubcap may have done Rick Nelson's last interview. Nelson and his Stone Canyon Band, IIRC the name, had appeared the night before the trip to Dallas in either Alabama or Georgia and were to depart for Dallas the next afternoon.
Hubcap did a phoner with Nelson late on the Friday night before the fateful flight west began.

I was working that night and couldn't make the concert when the hotline rang and it was Hubcap. All he said was, "Rick Nelson's plane went down. He's dead." Then a long silence.

I was on the air that night in Tyler.
In my scrapbooks, I have the teletype copy
and I went to see the crash. I have a piece of the
police tape that marked off the area.

Hubcap made the announcement to the crowd and what were once revelers grew silent after several women screamed. Then there was a moment of silence, somebody starting singing "Hello Mary Lou"The crowd picked it up, and soon everyone on stage and in the crowd sang the song. Hubacap then said "God Bless you Ricky we love ya"The crowd applauded. The band on stage then broke into "Garden Party".The crowd sang and hugged.

Believe What You Say-1958- great Ricky Nelson rocker! Should be played much more on "oldies" radio.

I just heard that great rocker on DICK BARTLEY's show. It followed another great one- GREAT BALLS OF FIRE. Then bring on some BUDDY HOLLY for me.

Wish the so-called oldies stations would play these great tracks more often.
