KDAZ Joining the Trend & Making a Move

KDAZ has filed plans with the FCC to dismantle one of its two towers, reduce daytime power to 500 watts, nighttime 65 watts non-directional and move to 700 on the AM dial. Looks like they will accentuate their 96.9 translator signal as have other stations. They've put up a new webpage with the moniker Conservative Talk ABQ https://www.conservativetalkabq.com . The station does now carry a good share of the Salem Radio Talk Format. The local morning show with Larry Ahrens and Frank Haley is rebroadcast on KCHF-TV which shares ownership with KDAZ.

It certainly makes sense to downgrade an AM signal just enough to meet the legal requirements for operations of its FM translator. The 96.9 translator apparently at present runs at 160 watts pointing north at Rio Rancho but has a CP to upgrade to 250 watts directed at the metro area like the other translator stations. However the format will likely appeal to the oldest demos who may still listen to AM radio so the translator may just be a nice addition as opposed to stations running a music format which may fully rely on the FM signal. It might be more of a challenge to KIVA than KKOB.
