Jon and Sherri out at Klove

We are in a very sad state indeed when Christian "ministries" employ the same "hostile takeover" strategies and unfeeling HR practices that plague the secular business world. If the world doesn't see the difference between how Christians and heathens behave - what incentive do they have to become Christians?

Our President/CEO was mentally and physically drained after the potential sale of the station I worked at to KLOVE....in fact he was in a defeatist mode and thought for sure the board would vote to sell. As I mentioned in an earlier post it didn't turn out that way. :) The vote came one day after a major event too....we didn't know if it would be a farewell or victory concert!

I was given a piece of copy at the show that night to read the following morning on the air basically saying that the Board is going to be making a major decision concerning this ministry today....please be in prayer for us. It was read thru the day as well by other staff. We didn't say outright thru this period that the station's life was on the line but our most ardent supporters and underwriters knew what was really going on.

Maybe you've seen the post that WLAB is for sale.....having lived in Fort Wayne for many years I hope the LCMS handles this right, and so far they seem to be.

Whatever you make of numbers (as in commercialism or reach), CCM still outsells Jazz and Classical in RIAA unit sales, annually.... We just tend to use the 'old phono' when the other media goes forward with the 'CD, Ipod and Streams'.... Just an observation... I really think CCM radio's biggest problem is becoming locally relevant when budgets are tight and the cash to spend on local outreach is not there.. Funny? Our secular counterparts are in the same 'pickle'.... When I wake up in the morning, God is STILL God and Jesus came here, lived here, ministered here, died here, raised from the dead here and accended from here..... No matter what weird 'spin' the world puts on it...... So be it..... :)

Outsells jazz and classical?...well skipper what you failed to note is so far this year CCM unit sales are down 10%.
Forget local budgets, that's been a problem forever and always will be. These are often under powered and remain under performing stations. It starts with product, and format momentum. For the past 3 years music has not hit a nerve apparently and the format isn't growing, clearly. I'm not saying it's over, but instead of saying "well the secular boys are in a pickle too" our Lord gave us minds to think and a job to do. We need to figure out how to get our audiences back.

This thread has drifted from the original post. I'm confused. Is Jon Rivers on or off Klove. The website makes no reference to him being on the air. Someone quoted a rumor...(very mature for a christian link wouldn't you say ) that Jon was going back on klove last monday. Seems like everybody is in Nashville for the dove awards. By the way, remember the old days when the dove awards had play on at least one cable network LIVE. It was TNN. Is it on tv? It was taped delayed last year. Another example of "where is our momentum in this format?"

I havent heard anything about Jon Rivers being back on KLOVE yet, so it will probably happen after this week is over(and the GMA actvities).

The Dove Awards are being broadcast live on the Gospel Music Channel tonight(4/23) starting at 8PM Eastern. IIRC, they're not on a lot of cable systems(mine included) and am unsure if they have a presence on Direct TV or Dish.

I'll agree - the ENTIRE music industry is in a slump....not just CCM.

I am sometimes a captive audience in the car when my KLOVE-listening wifey drives me.

With regard to the diminished CCM cume quoted earlier I believe it is the music. While I don't personally buy into the CCM kool-aid (with respect to their ideology, messages and callers) I would, like others, most likely listen if the music were of my liking. What I have heard to date is, in a word, trash. Mostly it is just noise with religious text. Repetitive and uninspiring. Something like the typical cul-de-sac garage band where the next piece sounds pretty much like the previous one.

If CCM is going to improve their audience through the music they need to play artists who actually have talent and a bit of demarcation. Over-modded guitars and heavy drums do not music make.

jy... You hit it on the head with relation to our CCM of current nature.. Seems we get into ruts, and then some 'rad' group goes to what the Christian media feels is the "edge" and what secular calls the 'mainstream'.... Billy Ray Hern was radical when breaking free of Myrrh/Word and starting Sparrow.. Then Sparrow becomes predictable and is bought by the secular giants who want the pie that is CCM.. So, new companies come out and then get gobbled up and new companies start and..... Radio is the same way.. We were told our early development at Way-Fm was 'edgy' yet we wouldn't last six months when we went on in October of '87 (Fort Myers-Naples-Cape Coral)... Humm? It still there! But, after Rider, Myself, Wilson, Becht and some of the first and second five year history of the network moved on (unfortunate that Mark moved on to Heaven so soon...), the station became 'norm' and even backed off of it's edge (at night toward teens)..... It has moved back toward that evening demo and the Denver version is slightly more agressive than the Nashville feed.... Then the "U" was my next stop (and last, to this point)....We were NewRock/Alternative and it's stayed at that level, but is now considered caculated.....Air-1 was of simular format and then moved to a more CHR approach to reach a wider 'giving' demographic audience... Who will be the next 'edge' in the CCM world?????? Look at the change at Olivet and Trevecca Nazarene's outlet... They were scared to go with the CHR and Rock versions of CHR/Rock artists singles and would play the ac/ballads of hip bands, until Way showed up in Nashville.. New leadership in the denomination took advantage and pused WNAZ and WONU to specific formats to reach those kids that would consider coming to their colleges for a post secondary education...... On the dog-eat-dog battles, Way almost came into Evansville and backed out on the commercia property due to seller's circumstances, and only at that time did we see K-Love wanting in the market.... Now they are and Way has a translator CP setting that will not make to air, because they don't see enough support for a super tanslator over K-Love "C3" entry on the Kentucky side of the bridge....Now we have 25kw K-Love, strong "A" WBGW doing Teaching, Lite AC-Inspo, WVHI-AM doing talk and dollar a holler, WCFY-LP doing hybrid CHR, WYIR-LP doing "Theocratic-NewRock/Alternative and secular market leader WIKY doing the 'live' morning show on Sunday's... Oh, WGAB-AM doing independent Baptist programming, as well....

Anybody tune in to 20: the Countdown Magazine this weekend? I tuned in this morning on Glory 1330 AM WGTJ in Gainesville just northeast of Atlanta. Of course, they're a non-K-LOVE affiliate, but that's okay. I noticed the tempo Jon was talking was very fast. Talk about plummeting your show's ratings down the drain. He should have just talked normal because back at the Dove Awards, his show won Radio Show of the Year. Speeding up the tempo of how you talk is not a way to improve your ratings better. Sometimes, I've noticed in past episodes, Jon will either speed up the tempo of a song or just play the radio edit. That's okay. But, this weekend Jon has just gone too far. If anybody wants a better countdown, my pick would have to be The Weekend Top 20 Countdown with Scott Smith. Some weekends, his countdown is copycat of 20: the Countdown Magazine, and the good news is Scott doesn't speed up the tempo of how he talks. If anybody else does speed up the tempo of how a person talks other than Jon Rivers, it would be Josh Ashtin who hosts both The Weekend 22 CHR Countdown and The Z-ROCK Radio Revolution. I haven't listened to Josh host The Weekend 22, but he definitely is a fast talker during Z-ROCK. If anybody wants to comment about this or get back to the topic at hand, please go ahead. Thank you.

I have no problem with the temp of weekend 22 (air it on my station)..

Could it be that station is pitching up the program and not the program provider itself?

So is Sherri still a part of 20 The Countdown Magazine? Also, what happened to Jon Rivers saying that hw would be back at K-LOVE soon that was at Hisair.net? It's definitely looking like this isn't happening at the present time at least.

My previous comments were posted in response to two posts from yesterday and today talking about Jon Rivers sounding like was talking faster, which implied he was back on 20 The Countdown Magazine. After my post they disapppeared. Is this because of the server changes?

Jon is still hosting 20 The Countdown Magazine. Sherri has not been doing the Christian Music Line, however; Jon's been doing that segment as well.

It's encouraging to see a wife do what she has to do for her marriage and for her husband to accept the wakeup call. Good for them for doing what it takes.
