Joke FM-The Next Format Fad

You know, Jack says a lot of cool things. He gives us a piece of his mind and sometimes his wit, independence or c-o-c-k--iness (that is the word!) Our reaction, if we are paying attention is to smile or maybe chuckle.

Why not go all the way, with Joke FM? The same music as Jack, Bob, Mike etc, but instead of a c-o-c-k-y single White guy doing a one sentence comment, have Jack and Bob or Jack and Jill do quick, good jokes. Then between songs we can really laugh and they can even do their thing between spots, so we don't turn the station back to Jack and miss the jokes that are made on Joke-FM between spots.

I really think that someday there will be a station that is automated and plays jokes between songs and between spots. It seems a lot more interesting than hearing Jack speak his mind. I always like to hear a good joke.

OK, now you can comment on Jack being a Joke? Go ahead, he plays what HE wants anyway. And Jack probably<P ID="signature">______________

Wait! I've got an idea! How about we get a LIVE guy to come on between songs, or even commercials, and say something witty and topical. Just think, the guy or gal could talk about stuff happening in the LOCAL community, so listeners would begin to think that the guy or gal was interested in the same things they were!

Wow. That would really be cool. Live, local, relatable radio. No liners, just people having fun. What a concept, huh?

I don't know. It might get expensive and affect the bottom line and the earning per share. What would the shareholders say?

Jack is different

This doesn't feel like the Jammin' Oldies fad, though (one of the most recent radio bombs). Jammin' Oldies never copped a CBS-FM or WJMK-type station during it's soup du jours frenzy. I also think the available technologies (satellite, iPods, Internet) have helped create this new concept.

Will it work? Only God knows. But it is THE buzz of our industry- at least it's better than trying to discuss the merits of less is more.)

Too young to appreciate it? Boy, you REALLY know how to make a guy feel old.

BTW, look up the word "irony" in your Funk & Wagnalls (another reference you won't get).

How do you think I feel? I was recently told on the Miami board that there are at least seven varieties of rock, and some people want different stations for each. I didn't see a noteworthy difference between Big 106 and Zeta and Y-100.
Why should there be three or more rock stations owned by CC but no Classical or Oldies or Jazz station in the market?

Everything after 1964 rock & roll sounds the same to me.

Perhaps this thread wasn't what I was expecting. :) Back in the mid-90's a struggling AM station in my hometown flipped from a classic urban format to all-comedy; a collage of live and classic stand-up cuts, plus clips from Monty Python flicks and similar films. There were no jocks.
"Funny 1540" was billed as the nation's first all-comedy station, a distinction that did nothing to help its ratings. It flipped to a nostalgia format the following year.

Re: The wisdom of the ancients

There are different CC stations because that is what they want. It is their stations. Right?

That's not what I meant.

Maybe I should have used parentheses:

Why should there be three or more rock stations (which
happen to be owned by CC) but no Classical or Oldies or
Jazz station in the market?

And the fans of CC's other (former) rock station -- which
recently switched formats -- are complaining that there's no
longer a rock station. Even though they still have Big 106,
Y-100, and the new 93.1 to choose from. Three more choices
than classical fans have.

Of course they can do what they want with their stations.

Doesn't mean I have to approve.
