I really think that "tweakability" is the ONLY real difference
of Jack. Then again, really, why any formatted station doesn't
ebb and flow from time to time is a mystery (or a sign of lazy
prgmrs.)

For years, we programmed Top 40/CHR stations on the beach to
go along with the weather and time of day. You really never
knew what was happening next and it showed in the ratings.

Jack, is still very "formatted" and tight in most cases. WCJK/Nashville
just decided to skew more toward sister station Mix, than away
and embrace more female listeners. That's sort of atypical,
but really makes sense. Still, though, for purposes of this
discussion (based on OC and Indy's Jack - WJJK is geared younger
and fresher.) It's still tough to go from Steve Miller Band
to The Gap Band and then put on Mariah Carey. JJK seems to be
leaning more current with Coldplay and Matchbox 20. That's going
to happen with CJK. Some of the older songs on Nashville's Jack
are not compatible with late 90's and early 00's sound, regardless
of the "concept" of playing everything.

Still, it's fun to be able to point arrows at anybody and everybody
(CR, AAA, CHR, AC) than it is to have all those arrows pointed at
you. That's what makes Jack different.

sound

See, I think Steve Miller plus Gap Band and Mariah Carey is too wide- the music is too polarizing. You really don't have to play "everything" to give the impression you're playing a super-wide variety. And I think that's why the Louisville V.H. station sort of (I hope this comes across right) sounds like the music all makes sense together, even though I've hear them play Brickhouse then Bon Jovi then Gavin Degraw I Don't Want To Be. They just all seem to fit together when on some of the Jacks I've heard it seems like some of the female friendly songs would be male turn-offs (and vice-versa). The Arch in St. Louis has that same flow and quality the Louisville station has.

Music Vs. Personality

How about music vs. Personality in the morning?

There's an interesting discusssion here: http://www.radio-info.com/mods/board?Post=641889&Board=programming<P ID="signature">______________

Personality

I'm not sure this is really a "will a more-music morning show work" discussion as it might be a "with the music expectations of Variety Hits listeners, might it not make more sense to have SOME personality presence without having jocks overshadow music, especially in AM Drive".

My betting is that the typical "morning zoo" or show laden with hype, features and a lot of talk will be counter to the expectations of V.H. stations, where THE thing compelling people to listen is the music. Change that dynamic much in AM Drive and it could be a huge mistake. I don't buy the "no personalities at all" idea but I just don't think the typical AC or Top 40 jock approach, a business-as-usual midset, is right for these stations.
