I don't know

I have never listened to a CCM radio station so I would like to know do artists like Kirk Franklin, Shirley Caesar, Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Smokie Norful and Kurt Carr get airplay on those stations?

Would old school gospel artists get any airplay?

These artists would get very little airplay on a CCM station.

This is due to the difference in musical styles, rather than a bias. These artists all fit the gospel genre.

In other words, it'd be similar to putting Loretta Lynn on a rock station - the styles are different
and appeal to different audiences.

Kirk Franklin had a huge crossover hit called "Stomp" - it even got considerable secular airplay. I think some of the other artists are capable of crossing over, but their song would have to have more general appeal. Generally - Christian listeners are just like secular (except for wanting God's standards in the lyrics and lifestyle of the artist). One size (or format) doesn't fit all.

We played Kirk Franklin's "Stomp" in regular rotation as long as there was listener demand. This was long before his public confession of his struggle with pornography - I don't know what we would have done if that controversy had hit during the song's popularity. Probably would have continued playing it, since he conquered the addiction. But it does complicate things for music directors who are bound to get criticism either way from kooks on one side of the controversy or other.

The corollary question - have CCM artists showed up on gospel stations of one type or another? I know little about the gospel formats, but apparently there are quite a few flavors of the format out there.

Actually Stomp was recorded by a group based in DFW called God's Property. Kirk just helped them out. I know I have never heard an Amy Grant or Michael W. Smith song on KHVN. If you call Martha Munzzi a CCM artist then thats the only one I know of.

Martha Munizzi generally isn't regarded as a CCM artist-except for a handful of stations (WNAZ, WAYK, WAYG, etc.), rhythmic music just doesn't fly on Christian AC or Christian CHR, unless if it's from tobyMac (aside from the huge surprise hit from Group 1 Crew, "Keys to the Kingdom"). On ChargeRadio.com (CHR) we've played some artists who've charted on Gospel, but usually they're rap singles that don't make much of an impact at Gospel or CHR.

I would imagine on a station like WGRB in Chicago http://www.gospel1390.com/ for sure, but I would not rule it out that CCM stations play some of the more well known songs at times from the artists named above (especially Kirk Franklin and Yolanda Adams) I would certainly request gospel songs be played on the CCM stations, but I have to agree with some of the comments made here that the sound has to flow and the station wants to usually have the musical selections fit a certain style. There certainly has to be a few gospel songs that are so mainstream that these would fit in a CCM format, how many and what artists I am not sure, I am not a programmer.

I hope she doesn't pull an "Evanescence"...
