Channel 8 is claiming its footage of Kenny Rogers being booked and finger printed on assault charges is exclusive--which it may well be. Just wondering how their camera man gained access to the booking area. It doesn't seem as if that area would be accessible to the public or the media, but at least in Channel 8's case it certainly was.

The tape, exclusive or not, was interesting, allbeit a further embarrassment for Rogers. He had a few words for the WFAA news camera but certainly chose not to assume his aggressive way as he did last week with the Fox 4 video people. Wouldn't have been a wise choice--assaulting even an inquiring camera in the jail. An open and shut case it indeed would have been.

If I remember correctly, the booking area for non-violent criminals there is in a "lobby" of sorts, meaning that it's readily accessible (particularly to media who are frequent visitors for perp walks and such, and well-known by staff).

Learn something new every day, especially by reading this board. Wait until Rogers finds out he was booked in with the minor crime figures, even those from the major leagues. The heavy weights are inducted in a more secure, out-of-the-way part of the hoosegow.

Thanks for the information.

Was it just me, or did it sound like the deputy who was finger printing Kenny made a nervous laugh when he made his remark to the cameraman?

My 2 cents: I think the "media" in this town is more concerned about sensationlism than about real journalism. If you want to "win" against kenny, ignore the guy and move on. We have real problems with crime, the homeless and corruption in city hall, go cover those stories and make a difference.

Amen. There is too much celebrity reporting, and not enough real stories being reported. The Kenny Rogers story was old,it wasn't a felony, therefore it was something to see on the last page of the sport section.

And you guys are exactly right, except that many producers and news directors find it far easier to roll tape on a ball player being booked than to further examine the plight of the homeless and such. Take a viewer-on-the-street poll and the results might show that the "average viewer" would rather see Kenny Rogers being finger printed than seeing the story of a person who sleeps under bridges and carries his/her worldly possessions in a burlap bag.

There's the old news formula advanced by many journalists that "people and conflict ARE the essence of news." So stations may well reason that Rogers is a known quantity and he was (most definitely) involved in a conflict, although a conflict he himself generated. Channel 8 and others likely would argue that they do indeed address issues of the homeless and other such topics along with major crime, in their newscasts, so the decision as to what is and is not news (at least with respect to what gets on the air and what doesn't) is a judgment that falls in the bailiwick of the content decision makers.

Perhaps it boils down to a statement made a couple of decades ago by John Chancellor during his tenure at NBC. He said, "When you watch NBC, the news is what we say it is." In that light, then, Channel 8 and the other stations have spoken. Kenny Rogers and his troubles are news.
