I have 2 HD units, a Dual car receiver that I bought early in the year and a Sony home tuner that I recently bought. They were both on sale (a $30 discount by the seller on each), free shipping, and I got a $50 rebate from IBOC on each. It seems to me that they are almost giving the things away.
I bought the car unit originally to listen to NPR talk on the HD-3 channel of local public radio station WABE. Except for the annoying dropouts, it sounded great for a couple of months. Then the treble got boosted excessively, causing it to sound pretty bad. I can no longer listen to it. The same thing happened on their HD-1 channel, causing an interesting effect when the radio switches back and forth between analog and HD. Their HD-2 channel seems to be OK. I suspect that they are broadcasting a pre-emphasized signal on their HD-1 and HD-3 channels.
I notice no difference in the sound of commercial stations between analog and their HD-1 channels. The programming on their HD-2 and HD-3 channels is just more of the same. It is like switching channels on cable TV - more of the same. Two of them have their AM talk signals on the HD.
