Dialing around in my automobile (yeah, I know, killing the planet...) this morning I happened upon a talk show that was flogging to death the recent horse racing tragedy.
The caller asserted that horses frequently die from something other than natural causes. Causes which "health classes" used to assert would cause "hairy palms" or lowered intelligence or "poor performance in sports".
The theory being that horses who had performed well but were past their prime bring premium stud fees but, alas, can only be in one place at a time. So, artificial insemination practices allow owners to maximally capitalize on their investment. Sometimes to the point of debilitating a horse to the point where even a common cold can kill them. With the poor horse having no choice in the matter....

Seems like we need a congressional investigation and we need it fast! It can't come too soon!
