Ft. Myers/Naples Post: Oldies 95 now '95-3 OLZ'??

Back in the mid to late '90s, they were known as '95.3 WOLZ, Good Times and Great Oldies'. Why not just go back to that positioner, or the CC favorite, COOL/KOOL 95, like WOLL in West Palm, known as KOOL 105.5?

'95-3 OLZ' doesn't roll off the tongue so easily. Well, at least MY tongue, anyways...

The positioner "95-3 OLZ" sounds an awful lot like "93-3 FLZ". And to be honest, they both roll off my tongue. :)
______________

When I was at WSRZ/Sarasota around '96-'97, when we changed frequencies from 106.3 to 106.5 we were "106.5 SRZ".

Speaking of which, wonder if the current Oldies 108 will go to 107.9 SRZ?
______________

I never understood this radio fascination with dropping the "W" from the calls.
It's like college radio, as if it's "hipper" or something without the W or K.

Oldies has a "negative connotation", especially those who are under 29 who think anyone over the age of 30 should die already. NOTE: These are the people more apt to pressure radio companies to puting dance and rap on all channels, with no more rock stations left/subjugated to AM/etc. (end rant) So, rather than just stay the course, in this PC world, oldies gets removed and watered-down to a generic airname, such as this station and here in Philly, we have 98.1 WOGL - the Greatest Hits of the 60's and 70's.
______________

The remixed jingles sound like they were remixed by an amateur at best. I wrote to tell them that the slogan is fine, but the jingles were just BUTCHERED!! Instead of using the whole track, they just cut out and patched parts together. I keep hearing "Super Hits 4" Cut 3 OVER and OVER while listening! UGH!

Gotta love it, though. Music and jocks are great, but everything else...what a MESS!

But...if they do well in the ratings-More power to 'em!

The mere mention of the word "oldies" makes corporate higher-ups squeal with uncomfortable visions of listeners who are...well, old! Those slow moving overly cantankerous gnome-like people who clog up the Publix on Senior Wednesdays buying two rolls of Scott Toilet paper. (And ONLY Scott young lady..)

The really sharp PD's are moving to stay under the radar by not mentioning oldies, and calling themselves a superhits based AC. Thats what was done in West Palm..and very successfully also. I am proud to be a part of thier success however small at Cool 105.5.

Other CC stations moving in the same direction include Twin Falls, Idaho..Salt Lake City, and Panama City. They get to keep thier ball as long as the phrase "oldies" is outtahere! I would not be at all surprised to hear that WSRZ follows suit.

> You know what??? I'm an old guy. Never thought stations should refer to themselves as "oldies". "Oldies" means different things to different people. Should be a much more creative way to say it. "Music of Your Life" was absolutely brilliant. Words like "Oldies" "Country" "Rock" have negative meaning to some people, so why do it??

on the jingle thing: maybe jimmy roberts has his hands tied on budget,
but you'd think CC would get a "bulk discount" on re-sings. ;-)

not residing in the area, but having heard OLZ on visits to friends who
work there (McGee, Morgan, Roberts), i think the station is a well-oiled
machine. Roberts and Morgan both have decades of major market experience,
and McGee and radio in the sunshine state are synonomous.
what of those of you within earshot? if they keep it timely (as can be
given the format) and moving, does it make for "fun" listening?
i grew up listening to The Big 68 WRKO in Boston (which went by both WRKO
& RKO until someone in Maryland said you get better credit for including
the W), so i'm a fan of Boss Radio (ball-2-the-wall, needles peaking
at +2 and never a drop...).

CTQ is redundant-------it should flip to Nostalgia and 50's oldies---yeah right

Loved the sound of those needles banging away and the audio chain taking care of the rest...modulation light constantly lit...wow

Just a reminder that you can listen to the station online live via wolz.com.
______________

"Words like "Oldies" "Country" "Rock" have negative meaning to some people, so why do it??"

Odd. I always thought that it was the quickest way to describe to the listener what your format is. If I hear a station playing the Beatles, Motown and Elvis and they call themselves "The Hits That Fizz, Blue Cow 102.6", I'd laugh at their moniker and know that they play OLDIES.

In Tampa, Oldies 104.7 recently switched to Q-105, the greatest hits of the 60's, 70's and 80's. Guest what? It doesn't take Einstein to figure out that they're playing OLDIES.

If PDs, OMs and those "lovely" people known as consultants (he said with tongue in cheek) believe their audience doesn't known what oldies is, those radio people underestimate their audience.
______________

An "oldie" to one person may be Glenn Miller and an "oldie" to another may be Supertramp. Hits that Fizz Love it!! Also have heard people say "they hate country" and when asked their favorites they list Kenny Rogers, Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, etc....however, hate country!

Hits that Fizz! Man that is really good..no kidding I like that..Carbonated radio is the next big thing. HD, and Quad, and AM Stereo have nothing on music "charged with Co2" There will always be a market for these songs..it's now a matter of creative packaging to re-sell them to a public that already has wayyy too many avenues for entertainment.

Curious question..Is there a "most downloaded/purchased" meter on I-tunes? Why not program a station based soley on those numbers?

Jeff... That is an EXCELLENT idea. Surely someone has access to those numbers and maybe even someone is using them.

Oh, the big problem with H20 radio is when you hit a bump and it spills in the back seat of your car. It leaves a stain. ("Yeah honey, that wet spot came from the radio").

Oldies 95

I get the whole "oldies thing"- that's not what I was commenting on.

...and in early 1997 became "Oldies 95, The Greatest Hits Of All Time", which led to some great number-one 25-54 ratings finishes. However, that was then, and 95.3 'OLZ reflects this is now. Kudos to Jimmy Roberts & staff for keeping a great station rolling!

There's a CHR/Top 40 station in Fort Myers called "B103.9"
it rolls off my tongue easily even if they would of called
themselves "B103" without the 9. B103 rhymes!

What I hate about some FM radio stations if it falls on say
107.7 or 107.9, they would ID themselves as 108 FM instead.
It should be 107 FM since it's in the 107 MHz band, not
108.

It's a good thing that B103.9 don't call themselves B104,
I like both B103 and B103.9 better!

Take care.

From Lee.

Stations that mention only whole numbers in their name generally round up instead of round down. For example, Tampa Bay's 95.7 was home to "96 Fever" (late-1970s), "96KX" (early-1980s), "Magic 96" (early-1980s) and "Mix 96" (early and mid-1990s). And don't forget the well-known "Q105" on 104.7 -- during their country phase, they called themselves "104.7, The Bee" -- very briefly -- before reverting back to Q105. (Never mind years of being Oldies 104.7).
