Fellow sports talker blows up Jim Rome

You know what?

This guy made some excellent points about JR that nobody seems to want to mention.

I've actually heard this guy, he was in Atlanta back in May I believe doing some work for the Braves station WGST. He also had an opportunity to go to 680 The Fan but opted to go to Denver where he is based.

I happen to think his work is very good, he streams on his website.

Reaction on him is split down the middle. There are those who like his style and those who cannot stand him.

But the point is that he blows up Rome pretty good and makes some pretty strong arguments for why Rome is the overrated sports talker that many people I talk to would agree with.

I had no idea that Rome scripts his entire show.

Talk about not pulling your punches.

youre kidding right? there's a reason you always here paper shuffling during all of the mind-numbing silence. and how he mis-reads........errr mis-pronounces words when he is supposedly just going off the top of his head. the kid is a joke. kornheiser use to kill him and his "$100,000/yr writers", all the while calling him Gnome.......

I vaguely remember this guy from a rim-shot signal, am-only sports talk station on the far eastern edge of Cleveland.
I think he also was trying to start a station in Fla., but ran into some problems with the LMA.

Anyhow, I found his show (and the station he ran) almost as unlistenable as VEW. But...maybe he has improved over the years.

The funny thing about the Ohio station is that it started with a lot of hype, he had a couple of "names" on the station (mainly a fired sportscaster from the local Fox O/O, who incidentally had the only show worse than Dino's) and ended losing a pile of cash, changing to all SNR and eventually going off the air-- as in going dark. Last I heard they gave the permit back to the FCC and walked away.

Not sure if that has anything to do with his opinion of Jim Rome, but it does provide some context.

That station was WATJ/1560 in Chardon.

OA details that in his blog:

LOVE to see a copy of the AllAccess "Look: our 50KW transmitter just GOT here!" ad... ;)

There also was star-crossed Les Levine, who today has a daily sports/talk show on cable access television. He's just been unable to find a steady RADIO gig - the places he's worked at - WERE/1300, WHK/1420 and WATJ - have all had their formats blown up from under him.

They did. Last June. Not to worry - their sister station was/is flame-throwing FMer WKKY/104.7...

Another thing, does it seem like Rome takes too much vacation time...
ERRRRRRR...takes too many trips to the basement? I think that radio hosts
usually take vacations around this time because of something about the
ratings books (someone please fill me in on this), but four weeks in a six-
week stretch, including one where one of the biggest stories in baseball
history breaks? Come on...

EVERYONE scripts their show to some extent. If you look at his takes on the website after the show, they read similar to his on-air delivery. Rome is a different guy in sports radio, but that's what makes him interesting. That's why I tune in. Same with Bruno or Czaban.

The one who is a joke is this Dino Costa, tried and failed everywhere he went so he decides to make a name by pot shotting on someone who HAS figured out a formula that works. Really makes me take him seriously. BTW - which national drive-time/midday shows do make it in NY or Chicago that aren't being subsidized by ESPN?

As far as the opinion that Jim doesn't have any unique opinions in sports - I can think of two: Tolerance and Abuse (crazy little league coaches, etc). I hardly hear any other sports radio host give any time to frank discussions on that in sports.

And wrt the fawning interviews - it sounds like that because he usually interviews guys who he knows are good interviews and have a good story to tell. That's why the Willis McGahees aren't invited back on his show but make the rounds regularly on other shows, but why you'll hear Feinstein, Mark Grace, Jalen Rose, John Lynch or Ray Ferraro come back every year.<P ID="signature">______________

Rome's show is tightly scripted. That's not a bad thing, but he does play it off...then he gets on the callers for 'reading' their stuff. He is a fraud, but he's not alone. There are others who don't script their show at all and act like sports is their life...

As for the Fawning Interviews, there is no way you can say he's just looking
for a 'good' interview. The guy rips the hell out of athletes during
monologues and then fails to ask them one hard question during interviews. He's a wuss. Everett probably scared the crap out of him.

I think he's very entertaining...But,I know he doesn't do well in Northern California...But it's hard to get ratings when you rip the area every time you talk about NorCal teams...he hurts himself with that crap as well..

Just my opinion...

That may be the best and most accurate diatribe I've ever seen about Jim Rome.

I too have ripped him on this board, but sadly, the author - Dino Costa - is a marginally talented hack who is no challenge for Rome and will never even get a chance to experience the PR machine Rome has had afforded his hyped-up existence. Clear Channel had Rome and Bruno in the same employ and never utitlized the marketting to put them back to back. Now Rome's lead-in has cost him ratings in those few remaining markets where he has the all-but-dead Fox Sports Radio garbage as his lead-in.

Well, say what you want about Jim Rome.....But at least he doesn't have a hillbilly heroin addiction! And at least he doesn't say silly/ridiculous/completely retarded things about black NFL quarterbacks!

Right & wrong on Costa

You are so right concerning this letter that Costa penned to Jim Rome. It is abot time someone in the sports media stood up and said the truth about Rome, who while a respected and well followed talk host, is less than what the hype builds him up to be.

However with dues respect I believe you are way off base with your critique of Dino Costa as a personality and talk host.

I heard him doing mainstream talk in Atlanta, and for a sports talker he took to that like a fish takes to water. Rare indeed.

I knew nothing of him until I heard him in Atlanta several months ago and have followed his path since that time.

I've heard him do about 7-8 programs in Denver on the Radio Colorado Network.

I believe he's a network caliber talent no question.

The reason I am bullish on Costa is because I feel he is as original a radio personality as I have heard in quite some time.

Now I'll admit that politcal talk is my forte, however Costa broadcasts a program that so far different from any sports talk show I have ever heard, his ability to intertwine a political slant to his shows makes it something I consider unique and as I mentioned, original.

I'd be interested in getting your definition of what "marginal" means to you.

While Costa seems to have a political view on things that would make Limbaugh and Hannity blush, his ability to procure an interesting sports based show with commentary that is top shelf and a guest list that is equally as good...is as good as it gets IMO.

I predict big things for this particular host and feel it is only a metter of time before his list of suitors is vast.

Sports radio is fortunate to have this host and i fmy prediction of big things in the athletic radio field no tpan out for him, here's hoping he goes back and gives mainstream political talk a try!

Where are the comments about Jim Rome? I don't see them anywhere on that mess of a website.
