Emergency radios

With the terrifying things we've seen and heard in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, it makes you wonder if you are prepared for a similar disaster. A good emergency radio, with its own power and proper emergency bands, can be a useful or even essential item to have. Can anyone outline what a good emergency radio should have, and can you recommend a particular model?

Thanks!

I've been considering a model that I've seen at places like The Discovery Channel store. It has a crank on the side (so it provides its own power), has a built in flashlight, and it's highly water resistant. Some models have a small TV built in if you want to get REALLY fancy about it. Not sure of the models, but I'm sure you could find one if you do a little digging. We go camping at least once a year so I'm thinking this would be a wise investment.
______________

I have the radio only model...had it for a few years.
It works very well.

Check out the price on this Emergency Radio

I just saw a Grundig Emergency Radio with a Crank, and a built in Cell phone charger for $49.95. As I experienced the Storm first hand, I found this model with a Fan, which can make the difference between life & death! No crank, but the price is nice! $25

I like the ones from Freeplay. Solar cells AND a self-driven crank - you wind the carbon-fiber spring, and as it unwinds, the generator charges the cells. Had one in daily use for about 5 years now. You can get 'em at Amazon, too.

dr. Demento used to start his show by saying, "Wind up your radio."

Now back to the serious discussion.

Grundig FR200 (BLUE) AM/FM/Short Wave Emergency Radio with Handcrank Power - Metallic Blue

It's $10 less!

I'd buy one myself, except that I have a crank-up/solar Freeplay radio (a model they don't make any more).

I have more emergency radios on my Hurricane Info On South Florida Radio site. (If you buy one through the site, it helps pay my ISP!)

Yes, however I liked the one with the Fan for $25 . You can lose your mind in 95 degree Weather without electricity enjoying the calm after the storm!

I have a FreePlay model that I bought from L.L. Bean a while ago.

Our lovely son actually cranked it so much that spring-thingie broke.

However, it does have a solar cell and works very well in the sun.
