Davidson Media Buys KTFX-AM

From All Access.com:

DAVIDSON MEDIA continues its buying spree by picking up Gospel KTFX-A (LOVE 1340)/SAND SPRINGS-TULSA, OK from WILLIAM PAYNE's K95.5, INC. for $1.225 million. DAVIDSON has also closed on its purchase of WNTS-A/INDIANAPOLIS from the estate of SAM SMULYAN (JEFF's father) for $2 million.

Any word on whether KTFX will stay Gospel once Davidson Media takes it over? I'm sure a call letter change will come since Bill Payne has the KTFX-FM calls in Warner. It seems like most of the stations they own carries some sort of Religious format and some non-Religious formats as well.

It will be Spanish-formatted. What an amazing price for someone to pay for the Tulsa area's lowest billing radio station. When I was previously associated with KTFX, I remember the asking price being around half a million, and that hasn't really been that long ago. The problem Davidson will have is to convince advertisers that they'll have an audience. KTFX's tower in Sand Springs doen't have a good enough signal in Tulsa's Hispanic east side, and their night signal is not much better than what a megahorn will give you for distance. $1.225 mil to reach Sand Spring's 2% Hispanic population - No comprehendo! Or, as we say in English - go figure!

That would make a potential for 3 spanish stations in the market if 101.5 goes Reg. Mex like some are saying it will.

Interesting.

I agree KTFX-AM's siganl is not that good at night on the East or South side of Tulsa, and what is so wierd is I was on Radio Locator's website checking out the night coverage map for KTFX-AM and it says that it covers the whole market at night. You think when they upgrade the power at night to 5kw that would cover the whole decent, but it must be directional pattern in the nighttime.

I remember when the old KTOW-FM Mix 102.3 flipped from Urban to Classic Country under Bill Payne, that they were going to move the Urban format to AM 1340 whic had the KTOW call letters at the time and drop the Gospel format. I heard some listeners got upset over this move and ended up staying with Gospel. It should be interesting to see what happens this time if Davidson flips 1340 to Spanish.
