Re: the discussion a while back on country-rock hybrid formats and such, what artists/songs would you consider essential. Would you play outlaw country classics with the new stuff, or just new stuff and rock? Interested in your views.

I don't know if this is what you are getting at, but, KHUS (US 93) in Omaha doesn't play Faith, Shaina, Martina or any other "pop sounding" female country artist.

What he's getting at is about like that station you talk about... No pop, pure country or in the words of Travis tritt "Put some drive in your country"

Basically a lot of the more popular of the texas scene would hit my list.. They are considered alternative country music (Pat Green,Cory Morrow, Cross Canadian, etc.) but are what a lot of Guys (and women) listen to in Texas...

I would agree on the outlaw country but some of it has been played to death but yeah David Allen Coe (Like Jack Daniels, if you please), Johnny Paycheck, etc... That's when women sang a lot of male liked songs too (Like some of Dolly Parton's early stuff)

On the rock, Those that have been described (definitely), Three Doors Down for sure..and Probably a case by case on the songs and artists afterwards (Like Bon Jovi's "Blaze of Glory" , but not some of his other material which would be deamed possibly too hard... more of a classic rock AOR middle ground like REO speedwagon)

But that would be my picks along with basically those described in other posts

Or in the words of new artist Keith Anderson play some "Three Chord Country And American Rock" :)

As an example only, here is what Outlaw Country 92.5 is playing in Tampa Bay.

Cowboy Troy, I Play Chicken With The Train
Pat Green, Baby Doll
Seven, Drunk Chicks
Lauren Lucas, What You Ain't Gonna Get
Jason Aldean, Hicktown
Rhett Akins, Kiss My Country Ass
Dierks Bentley, Lot Of Leavin' Left To Do
Brian McComas, Middle Of Nowhere
Bobby Pinson, Don't Ask Me How I Know
Trace Adkins, Songs About Me
Hot Apple Pie, Hillbillies
Shooter Jennings, 4th Of July

When they throw in the Skynyrd, Tom Petty & other southern rockers, it makes me want to hit the scan button.

Then what you think of Van Zant currently on country radio (Lynyrd Skynyrd lead Johnny Van Zant with .38 special lead Donnie Van Zant)?

By the list, I take it you are more for the progressive country movement?

BTW, Like the name...

If I'm scanning the dial and hear these artists (include LeAnn Rimes and even something like "Amazed" by Lonestar), I won't stop to stay because it sounds like I landed on an AC station. On the other hand, if I hear Tom Petty or Sheryl Crow, I would think it's just one of those "Jack" Variety Hits stations.

What would catch my attention is hearing a country-sounding song by someone like Stevie Nicks: "After The Glitter Fades," Olivia Newton-John: "Banks Of The Ohio," John Mellencamp: "Jackie Brown," or the Pointer Sisters Country Grammy-winning "Fairytale." Possibly Bruce Springsteen, along the lines of "I'm On Fire" or "My Hometown," not one of his well-known rock hits like "Dancing In The Dark."

I guess just like everyone else, if I like the song, I stay on that frequency. If I hate it, I push the button and I'm gone. There is one country station that seems to be playing "Mr. Mom" in a hot rotation. I liked the song when it first came out. Now, I dive for the button.

What are your thoughts on "male driven" songs/formats?

I suspect the reason that most country radio is female-oriented today has to do with the fact that many advertisers are, for the most part, interested only in women between 25 and 54 years of age, the so-called "soccer mom" demographic.
