Hey 2001, you ARE right on target...All I've been trying to pointe out to Oldiescat is the vulnerability of KOOL despite their appearent monopoly on the formatt in this market. I, too love Mac Arthur Park and even have the Four Tops version of it which you can also hear on stations like KRRR. I also have Mike Oldfield's 12" LP Tubular Bells with the long versions on each side. Unfortunatly nobody here in Denver is getting to hear them much because I've been displaced as a D.J. since Februrary when the gig I did my regular weekly shows at got sold (The Shamrock Bar at 54 S. Broadway). I played my "Operation Rewind" there for two and a half grate years, with six previous months at a club farther down Broadway. I left radio (always a sideline) several years ago because I enjoyed being the "ambience" D.J. (a rare breed these days) and interacting with my listeners face-to-face. Although I can still get one-time gigs here and there, such as the show I did Saturday night for displaced fans of Fey's cancelled Fathers'day concert, I'm still optomistic I can work something out with another club on a regular basis. There are a couple of places I've been talking with owners of. When I do play, however, I almost always have pepole come up to me and say, "wow, I haven't heard that one in years!" Of course we all know that's because KOOL don't play it. I feel I'm being a constructive critic of that station as I do know Randy Jay personally and he knows how I feel about their play list. He keeps trying to reassure me that "in time they will expand". I'll admit I've heard a handful of smaller label stuff recently that I don't remember KOOL playing before. But they do still get repetitive with songs like "O pretty woman". Why don't we ever hear Orbison's "O Blue angle" or "Ride Away" on KOOL?

It would be great to have more than one choice for Oldies in any market.
And it has not happened since the early 90s in Washington DC.

With what's going on with Oldies right now, there's not a chance in hell any radio group would take (as they see it) the risk. There's just not enough audience for 2, it's always more difficult to knock off an incumbent (especially one that's performing than most in it's format around the country) AND do something that Wall Street would view in a negative light.

So, what we might want or think is cool is often contrary to what a market will bear. KOOL 105's numbers are what they are- there's nothing at all misleading about them.

One more news flash- there isn't a station in America whose listeners don't have "issues" with their favorite station or things they'd change about it. No radio station anywhere always pleases all of it's audience all of the time-- it's just not possible.

Well, I'll stick by what I said earlier. KOOL's "variety" is anything but!
And if they continue to play the same old "oldies"....Well, then KOOL 105 is a good example of why Denverites who don't have satellite radio already should seriously consider it!

Also, just because a station is what it is, and many people have issues with it (or other stations in their listening area), that doesn't mean that that's the way it has to be! Your last post makes it seem that way! It's not that way! Change is good! And if the music at a particular station doesn't change (for the better), then perhaps the management at that station needs to be changed!!!

Maybe me and my friend strapshoe need to lead a crusade in the Denver listening area! Start a "listener revolution" of some kind!

You're really not reading closely.

This has nothing to do with Kool being great or terrible or anything between- all I am stating are facts.
What I'm saying is that in today's Oldies environement (shaky ground), it's not realistic for another group to do Oldies in Denver, challenging a heritage Oldies station with good ratings and revenue.

I'm not seeing a long line of others agreeing with you that ANYBODY should or would change formats to Oldies to try and dethrone Kool 105 and that's because to anybody experienced in radio with half a brain, it makes ZERO sense.

This isn't a matter of whether they should- it's whether anybody would and, cat, they would not.

Hey 2001,
I live far enough north I can get a "fair" signal on KARS 102.9 and that's what I'm listening to nowdays. Outside of attending their KOOL concert next weekend because I like THE PERFORMERS there, I've got no use for 105.1 FM anymore...

If any oldies listener living in the Denver area took the time to listen to an oldies station from out of state, like KRRR in Wyoming or KOMA 92.5 FM in OKC, they would know what they're missing! When the sun went down in my area I could get KOMA 1520 AM, and I would listen to KOMA at night. I liked KOMA 1520 AM. It had a wide variety of music and great DJ's. KOOL 105 had nothing on KOMA AM, believe me! You want to talk about a "heritage station"?? KOMA was in a class by itself. Sadly, KOMA AM switched over to an all-news format a few years back and now I don't have another oldies station to listen to my area when the sun goes down! (Oh, well!)

That's a big "if", my friend. Radio listeners have lives, lives that are much too busy to be seeking out something different when they're somewhat satisfied with what they have. It doesn't matter whether another station may seem "better" to you or I. Radio listeners just do not think in those terms.

Remember- the world you and I live in is very different than the normal, everyday radio listener. They do not view things the same way we do. And, if you asked most of them, they don't believe they're missing anything.

(and let's put this into proper perspective-- an Oldies station in market #267 has ZERO influence on Denver. I could put an EAS tone on in Cheyenne and get a 2 share).

Could be. The funny (and sometimes maddening) thing about radio listeners is that, in general, they'll put up with mediocrity because they're comfortable with what they usually listen to. When they travel, they'll hear a different Oldies station and kind go "wow- that was really great".

We are all creatures of habit and will quite often lean toward what's comfortable vs. seeking out new choices--it's human nature and more true the older we get. That makes it especially challenging for any new station to get listeners to even give them a try, much less their loyalty.

The numbers were solid in New York and Chicago and they were still doing very well on revenue. The chances of Kool 105 switching are fairly high. Even though Jack is already in Denver, Infinity still may switch the format because obviously Infinity is moving away from oldies. The target demos are starting to age. I don't agree with the attitude of advertisers, but it is just the way it is. Once Kool 105 starts losing money, I'm sure a format flip is in the works. T

Doesn't matter. Same could be said for Jazz stations or Spanish stations.
So what? It doesn't mean a direct competitor comes in and blows Kool out of the water (at best, for the new guy, they split the Oldies shares in the market--
making them both losers).

Actually, #267 is a typo- Cheyenne is actually #286.

ahh, you are right. I didn't think about that. The situation with Kool 105 is similar to the situation in Philadelphia. Infinity owns WOGL, an oldies station.
