CHR is getting too generalized... (idea from post below)

I'm going to chime in, but addressing all Top 40 stations.

I've said it in the past and I'll say it now - we're forgetting all the classics...and dance. CHR is just getting more and more generalized.

What's happening to programming? The reason we have Program Directors is to give stations their own unique sound. If I could program, sure I'd play the hell out all of today's hits... but once or twice an hour I'd also throw in one of these classics:

Mark Morrison - Return Of The Mack
DJ Sanny - Heaven
En Vogue - Don't Let Go
Usher - You Make Me Wanna
Third Eye Blind - Semi-Charmed Life
Rockell - In A Dream
Robyn - Do You Know What It Takes
Darude - Sandstorm
Robyn - Show Me Love
Ginuwine - Pony
Jimmy Ray - Jimmy Ray
LL Cool J - Father
Smash Mouth - All Star
TLC - No Scrubs
Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away
Blaque - Like I Do
K-Ci & JoJo - All My Life
Mase - Feel So Good
INOJ - Love You Down
Allure & 112 - All Cried Out (Save more for Overnights)

In my opinion... just scheduling TWO of these songs an hour would help justify a real CHR/Top 40 station. If I had a chance to program, I'd put a nice "classic" right at the bottom of the hour, and then around :57 also - that way it can be dropped if neccessary. I'll be turning 18 soon, and hopefully will be landing a job within radio to get my start.

Now I know many of you would say that you'd never play "(pick song from list above)" on your station... but, I made that list according to the market I'm in... find your niche - what "sound" does it have?

I know some stations are limited to what corporate wants them to do... but, listening online to many stations - they're sounding a LOT a like... and forgetting about what they were back in 2000 and earlier... radio has changed a LOT since then; I want to take it back - and keep it good.

Lets not forget Lit - My Own Worst Enemy

and maybe

Citizen King - Better Days
Goo Goo Dolls - Black Balloon
Backstreet Boys - Larger Then Life, I Want It That Way and All I Have To Give
Creed - Higher

several CHRs still throw Lit on occationally from what I heard on my travels. I think it has a really good sound to it. Lots of the songs listed here remind me of the late 90s when CHR kicked total ass.
______________

And you're right - CHR kicked total ass... I didn't include BSB, or Goo Goo Dolls on my list fearing people would shut it out as belonging more on Hot-AC stations now... But yes, most of my list came from 1997-99 ...I was 12 years old... and I can still hear those tunes in my head...Remember Merril Bainbridge's "Mouth" ? - that one has always stuck with me also.

Well I'm glad to see that many people agree with me - and it shows (myself being only 17) - that you don't need years of experience to know how to schedule music... Too bad there's so many legalities, and so much cost, to start an LPFM, or I'd have one up in an instant.

I just heard the Merril Bainbridge song for the first time in years a couple weeks ago. Awesome to hear again. I was only 9 back in 1995-1996 and can clearly remember hearing it on the local Hot AC stations. We had no CHR until 1998.
______________

These are all Hot AC titles. Pick either CHR or HAC...can't be both. If I had to pick one BSB, it would be neither of the ones you listed and I'd feature it as some sort of 'guilty pleasure'-type of thing.

Lit is a great gold to spike in on occasion.

You mean "Sammy"? :)

> En Vogue - Don't Let Go
Good one.

> Usher - You Make Me Wanna
I still here this often.

> Third Eye Blind - Semi-Charmed Life
Nope...this is Hot AC all the way

> Rockell - In A Dream
Ehh...I can make room for something better.

> Robyn - Do You Know What It Takes
Nope. This is more Hot AC

> Darude - Sandstorm
Aww hell yeah!

> Robyn - Show Me Love
MAYBE this tune...I would have to see what other stations are in the market, their demo, etc. before determining whether this goes in or not.

> Ginuwine - Pony
Still here it often.

> Jimmy Ray - Jimmy Ray
No way...maybe as a novelty type thing...play it and put it away!

> LL Cool J - Father
Stiff. Out of all of LL's songs, there are several more better ones...Loungin (Remix), Doin' It, Hey Lover (w/Boyz II Men)

> Smash Mouth - All Star
No way...Hot AC all the way

> TLC - No Scrubs
I still hear it quite a bit, but I'd go deeper into the library...some of their first stuff "What About Your Friends", "Baby Baby Baby" as well. Plus with "No Scrubs", I see no reason why Hot AC's can't be spinning this late afternoon/nights/weekends.

> Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away
No way...Hot AC all the way

> Blaque - Like I Do
It's "808 (Remix)" -- great gold.

> K-Ci & JoJo - All My Life
Yes.

> Mase - Feel So Good
Possibly...

> INOJ - Love You Down
Yes.

> Allure & 112 - All Cried Out (Save more for Overnights)
Again...another one of those "novelty" type tunes...spike it in once for something and put it away.

You really want to watch your turnover on these songs. You don't want to turn them over too often to where the "oh wow!" factor of these songs are gone from your P1's. Plus, I am not a fan of those PD's who use the gold titles as their drop songs. If you're the only station in the market that would play "Come Baby Come" or "Rump Shaker", then give the tune its' 4 minutes...after all, you have it in your active gold for a reason! Spin it! I'd sacrifice a select recurrent over a gold.

WKSC Chicago plays this like a Current. The 808 remix. In winter 2002 I sat up listening and heard it once every other hour. I'm sick of it.

The golds your mentioning are all fantastic, but what's your reasoning behind them. Yes they were big in their heyday...sure some will have the wow factor for a few spins, but how many are you thinking of simply because they happened to have been PERSONAL favorites. I hear many different recurrents on CHR's throughout the country and imo they vary greatly and I often wonder if it was teh PD who wanted to create a buzz for a minute, but what's the cost of playing these songs more than 30x?

All of the ones I listed happen to be my personal favorites, however, they would also definitley fit into the market I'm in, Tampa. When people think of Florida - an optismistic view would think sun, water, waves, beaches...ect... a "tropical" environment - thus, you put "tropical-sounding" gold in it... which would be more "Pop" music, and less of RUN DMC type of classics... each market responds differently - I think Tampa would lean towards the songs I have listed. Example: A well-rotated Gold in Tampa is Rockell's "In a Dream" - but, in Detroit - the market may not respond well to dance, so they play whatever fits their niche...

Sorry if there's any rambling sentences above; just woke up.

Zone 1061 Norfolk, plays Alice Deejay often

You would not play these old songs 30x a week, u would play "all the hits" and not "forget the hits." You would play Lit, not every day, maybe only once a week, but you would play other old songs as well. I say 2 songs an hour. It will bring more variety and ppl would want to stay longer on the radio instead of 2 hrs later the same playlist is being shot back at you, and listeners tune out. Sure some of those songs mentioned maybe HOT AC now, but then it was CHR/pop ....so why cannot still play them? Our audience is older cause we keept some of them from the 90s, and the young would appreciate it 2, if they hear it enough.

You Can't Be Both

One thing that urks me about CHR's are the ones that sit on the fence and can't decide for the life of them what they want to do. It's like their afraid to do one thing, because it'll jeopardize another. Meaning they're afraid of losing that 34-year-old woman, who's not even in the core, so they'll play Edwin McCain (as an example). This list is one of those where if I were to hear these titles on a CHR (outside of any specialty show), I'd be like "Either do CHR or Hot AC and get off the pot already!"

Most of your titles simply do not fit a CHR sound today. You have to keep in mind what's current in CHR today. Plus, many of the titles you listed, should be getting play on Hot AC's and some even get spun on AC's (UB40, Madonna, Tina Turner.

On your list, I saw a handful that would fit on CHR today and most of those would have to be seriously dayparted. The only ones I saw where you could keep a wide open daypart is probably Tony Toni Tone, Color Me Badd and BBD.

You claim your station would lean older, which would classify you as an Adult CHR. Plus, if you have a Hot AC in town, how are you going to sound different from them, since many of these songs listed could spin on HAC's? You certainly aren't going to keep people by playing stiff's like New Order, Sunscreem and Stereo MC's.

It's one thing playing songs that us radio people know and like. It's another when it comes to you core demographic. It's no different in theory than if someone were to call and request that Traci Spencer track. YOU might like it and recognize and obviously the listener does too, BUT, how do the other thousands of people listening think of the song? This is where you need to know your demo.

Not ripping your list apart, so don't take it personal (Monica, 1995 LOL). It just gets frustrating to hear stations that *claim* they're CHR, but they can't seem to figure out their identity. We have two CHR's here in Northeast Ohio that are like that. They'll play Akon's "Bananza" and go into Third Eye Blind or some 80's tune -- both gold titles that are train wrecks for starters, but don't even fit the format anymore.

And both of these stations have competitors in their market where they can hear those other titles.
