I'm going to chime in, but addressing all Top 40 stations.
I've said it in the past and I'll say it now - we're forgetting all the classics...and dance. CHR is just getting more and more generalized.
What's happening to programming? The reason we have Program Directors is to give stations their own unique sound. If I could program, sure I'd play the hell out all of today's hits... but once or twice an hour I'd also throw in one of these classics:
Mark Morrison - Return Of The Mack
DJ Sanny - Heaven
En Vogue - Don't Let Go
Usher - You Make Me Wanna
Third Eye Blind - Semi-Charmed Life
Rockell - In A Dream
Robyn - Do You Know What It Takes
Darude - Sandstorm
Robyn - Show Me Love
Ginuwine - Pony
Jimmy Ray - Jimmy Ray
LL Cool J - Father
Smash Mouth - All Star
TLC - No Scrubs
Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away
Blaque - Like I Do
K-Ci & JoJo - All My Life
Mase - Feel So Good
INOJ - Love You Down
Allure & 112 - All Cried Out (Save more for Overnights)
In my opinion... just scheduling TWO of these songs an hour would help justify a real CHR/Top 40 station. If I had a chance to program, I'd put a nice "classic" right at the bottom of the hour, and then around :57 also - that way it can be dropped if neccessary. I'll be turning 18 soon, and hopefully will be landing a job within radio to get my start.
Now I know many of you would say that you'd never play "(pick song from list above)" on your station... but, I made that list according to the market I'm in... find your niche - what "sound" does it have?
I know some stations are limited to what corporate wants them to do... but, listening online to many stations - they're sounding a LOT a like... and forgetting about what they were back in 2000 and earlier... radio has changed a LOT since then; I want to take it back - and keep it good.
