After three years on iHeartMedia's monster signal News/Talk AM 640 KFI, the Los Angeles Chargers are moving their NFL play by play broadcasts to co-owned Alternative “Alt 98.7” KYSR. KYSR will also air a two hour pregame and one hour postgame show, with KLAC 570 also simulcasting select games.
First thoughts - (1) With the Los Angeles Rams on 93.1 Jack-FM (KCBS-FM) it makes sense the Chargers would desire the same. (2) Yet, for Chargers fans in San Diego, where they spent nearly 50 years of their existence, the booming AM 640 KFI comes in like a local. KLAC is audible in San Diego but not nearly as well as KFI, and 98.7 FM is overridden by adjacent XHMORE-FM 98.9 FM from nearby Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. (3) I don't see how this serves to aide ALT 98.7's format battle with KROQ. KROQ is consistently in format, whereas now weekends for 98.7 will be a guessing game (Sports or Music)? (4) It is good to see KFI return to being all News/Talk without any sports play by play interruptions to its compelling weekday and weekend lineup of hosts. KFI is the one AM station in market #2 to mostly avoid infomercials and sports intruding into its programming. Even the ever-reliable KNX has now sadly added Saturday (cars) and Sunday (legal) morning paid programming.
