Apparently, Good News Broadcasting Network was supposed to close on K14RK yesterday, May 2, provided that they had raised $1 million of the $1.5 million purchase price. As of March 15, they had raised $900,000, and at the rate they were raising money, they should have topped the million dollar mark by now, but it would have been close, and if there were any drop-off, they may have fallen short. We will see if there is a consummation notice filed this week, but as of midnight on May 3, there is no change in programming on channel 38.

Based on their other stations, I expect to see GNTV on 38.1, GNTV Latino on 38.2, GNTV Kids on 38.3 and GNTV2 on 38.4. There is no telling what will happen to the affiliations with Ritmo Vision, ACE TV, EEE, Retro TV and Rev'n.

Quick question d. I thought Q & H were asking for 1.2 million?

Frankly, those two should be eternally grateful for $900 grand! WTF?? That storefront "station" isn't even worth that, and that's being very kind. o_O

And the sale is consummated. If the Seventh Day Adventist Church is willing to pay $1.5 million, I'm sure Quiñones is willing to accept it. Now the new owners have to deal with interference from KTVK's Globe/Miami translator K14NA-D in the SE valley.

K14RK-D is now using its actual channel instead of virtual channel 38. Good News Broadcasting has replaced former programming with their own lineup:
  • 14.1 GNTV (3ABN/Hope Channel mix)
  • 14.2 GNTV Latino (3ABN Latino/Esperanza mix)
  • 14.3 GNTV Kids
  • 14.4 GN Music
  • 38.7 Nightlight station airing GN Music and directing viewers to tune in to channel 14.

Makes sense to switch from 38 to 14. That way people have to go past you if they are switching between 12 and 15.

The PBS station in Phoenix doesn't have PBS Create. It has something called 8 Life. I guess that's a substitute?

In addition, Tucson doesn't have PBS Create or PBS World. Only PBS Kids. And something they call PBS 6+. I wonder what that is.

You'd think EVERY PBS station in the U.S. would have Create and World as subchannels.

Taking it a step further, I'm kinda surprised that there isn't a statewide PBS network for Arizona, especially considering that KAET and KUAT are both owned by the big state schools in the Grand Canyon State. Build a full-power signal for Prescott/Flagstaff, originating from Northern Arizona University, and with the translators for both KUAT and KAET, you'll have the entire state and the border areas covered. Also kinda of a surprise, neither station carries First Nations Experience, which is a network that features shows and documentaries about Native Americans, who are all around Arizona, especially in the southern Phoenix metro. I realize it's carried on a couple of low-power channels in the Gila River Community, but why not a statewide reach between KAET and KUAT...

Did you know that NAU filed for channel 16 Flagstaff in the summer of 1996?

Something called the Arizona Educational Broadcasting Foundation also filed for it. It looks like they would have built a Christian station based on their principals. The FCC designated the two applications opposite each other in 2001 and dismissed both on March 3, 2003, but I cannot find why. Probably something DTV-related.

When people talk about "why isn't public broadcasting in AZ like in other states", I point to a few factors.

The first is the low number of public educational institutions. The three state universities, the Maricopa community colleges, Arizona Western College, and two tribal entities (KNNB and KUYI) are the only owners of NPR stations in the state. Phoenix never had the kind of 10-watt Class D college radio culture that other major cities did because there were so few institutions to own a station like that. The FM dial started at 91.5 in the Phoenix area well into the 1980s, and the other stations that showed up on it were Christian or KNAI (and then KVIT later). Likewise, there were few institutions that could dream of running a TV station. (Casa Grande Union High School actually applied for channel 43 down there.)

Other junior colleges, etc. showed little to no interest. (One notable if brief exception is Gila Junior College, now Eastern Arizona College, which had a very short-lived FM in 1949–50 that was the first in the whole state, KGIA 88.1. I've wanted to learn more about that for years, but that would require going out to Thatcher and looking at archives there.)

Secondly, ASU's plans to start what likely would have been the "second" NPR station here in the early 1980s were derailed by budget cuts. KBAQ was born out of competing proposals for classical stations from KJZZ and ASU that the FCC threatened to send to a time-share deal.

Down in Tucson, the University of Arizona had done some radio dabbling in the 1920s, but it was not until 1968 that UA returned to radio with the donation of the 1550 frequency. They were not on FM until 1975. NAU's first station was a 10-watter, KAXR, on the air in 1970 it seems. The Wikipedia article looks all sorts of wrong, so I need to do some research. Arizona Western got into radio like UA did—by donation of an inferior facility being divested so its owners could buy something else—in 1970.

If you compare Arizona to Washington, a state of similar size, one will note the more numerous educational institutions (state universities and otherwise) that produced a very different public broadcasting culture. Washington state has four PBS operators and more—and larger—public radio stations.

Both KAET and KUAT once had Create. When each chose to offer their own branded subchannels, the programming didn't really change much. Both Eight Life and PBS 6+ look and feel very much like when they were Create. Tucson used to carry World on their secondary PBS station KUAS, but now KUAS is nothing more than a fill-in translator for KUAT, reaching areas that are terrain-shielded from KUAT.

One thing I've learned about Arizona in the nearly 30 years I've lived here: we like to do things our own way and find very little value in either national branding or in going along with what everyone else does. It affects all aspects of Arizona life from public television to highway numbering (you won't find any 3-digit interstates in Arizona; we prefer state-branded routes since we had to pay for them ourselves without much federal funding) to church polity (the denomination of the church I attend is based in the deep south and ministers from there are constantly flummoxed by the fact that what works in Tennessee and Georgia goes over like a lead balloon in Arizona).

Oops. Got a validated correction on the KWBA lineup.

KWBA uses 9.1 for the KGUN simulcast, 58.1 for CW and 58.2 for Court TV, but 58.4 for Grit, 58.5 for Defy TV and 58.6 for TrueReal, not 58.3 - 58.5.

There IS a statewide network for PBS in much of Arizona..... A system of translators to serve many of the communities
in the rugged terrain of Arizona. KAET serves the Northern and Western portions of the state while KUAT serves the
southeast quarter of the state. Building a full power station to serve Prescott/Flagstaff would NOT improve reception
in most areas. KNAZ/KFPH are SUPPOSE to serve both areas but are quite difficult to receive, especially in parts of
Prescott. Again, the terrain and distances are the big factor. KNAU FM has a system of translators that provide NPR
as well as local programming to most of Arizona from the New Mexico to california borders. Finally, How many PBS
stations have FIVE different programming streams???? I'll tell you, NOT MANY!!!!!!! As what was stated previously,
In Arizona, we have a habit of doing what works best here and not following blindly like many other places........
