Bigby's Blues

Too bad Spittle's no better. Russ Martin uses the N-word on his show without reprimand. It gets bleeped, so listeners are none the wiser.

How can a PD allow that word to be used freely in his workplace? How can an on-air talent keep his job while using that word?

That's Infinity. Ot-nay oo-tay right-bay, if you know what I mean.

Bigby is a pig and totally runs amok where ever he lands. Why? Oh why do people continue to hire this blowhard? The karma boomarang is gonna smack him on his snout!

So let me get this straight. You think that Gavin Spittle has a measure of control over Russ Martin? Wow, you really dont know much about radio. Im not sure how you found this message board. By the way, listeners are wise - that is the joke. And Russ regularly has fine, upstanding African American citizens call in to drop the N-bomb which goes un-bleeped. It's called a bit. Get it?

Maybe I don't know much about radio. But civil rights laws don't stop at a radio station's front door. If an African American Infinity co-worker ever overhears Russ's white butt using the N-word, it'll be law suit central. And Infinity won't win.

So it's not an issue of whether Spittle controls Russ. It's an issue of whether Infinity REALLY wants a host uttering the N-word into an open microphone and relying on the delay system to clean it up.

The law however, does stop at the studio door, when you are dealing with the creation of entertainment product. Perhaps you think camera operators can sue a porn producer for being exposed to sexually explicit material or Sherman Helmsely could reap a windfall for racially insensitive comments he endured during the creation of the Archie Bunker show? Nope.

Racial slurs ... are wrong ...

No, I do NOT get it ... not AT ALL?

Explain to me how a racial epithet is funny ... please.

Then we will all know.

Your statement is ignorant.

Racism in any form ... is wrong ...

Wrong is wrong ...

Call it what it is ...

Again, racial slurs are evil ... Martin should apologize or be fired and quickly

Let me be clear ... because some seem timid.

Others think this is funny.

Racial slurs are not funny and should NEVER be uttered on a radio station.

If Russ Martin does this, he should be suspended.

If he will not apologize, he should be fired.

I am trying to be fair to Martin, but this goes way too far.

He is a grown man ... he should act like one.

Instead, he acts like a toddler.

And, I would tell him exactly that to his face.

And, I would debate him anyplace ... anywhere.

Because Russ Martin is on the LOSING side of this debate.

You're talking about a different era in one instance, and a different communications medium in the other. You're also talking about censorship.

None of the above apply to this conversation. The issue is whether Russ could get his company sued a new pie-hole because he's throwing the N-word around in the studio. Your "studio door" provides absolutely no protection for that kind of behavior.

Let's be balanced about this. First Tony is right racial remarks are wrong, BUT there have been several times on K104 and The Beat I have heard "cracker" "Pecker wood" in reference to caucasians. Should they be overlooked and not apologize or is there a difference in standards here?

Not radio...and borderline off topic...but remember the
scene from ``The Godfather (I)'' where movie mogul Jack
Woltz is attempting to insult attorney Tom Hagen with
Italian ethnic slurs?

Hagen cooly says, ``I'm German-Irish''. And then Woltz
retorts, visibly angry, ``Well, let me tell you
something, my kraut-mick friend. I'm gonna make so
much trouble for you, you won't know what hit you.''

Finally that scene ends with Hagen calmly saying, ``I
admire your pictures very much.''

I personally found that scene funny and I'm part kraut
with some mick relatives. :)

And if you listen closely, note that Russ NEVER says the "N" word himself...NEVER! Nor does J.D. (well, there was that time when Russ had JD read something that when played backwards sounded a lot like he was saying "Big N*****!) Other than that, "the word" is always spoken by a "brother", usually Eddie, a regular on the show. The "N" word is often used as a greeting between blacks and actually is considered in some ethnic circles as a term of endearment...but ONLY when spoken BETWEEN members of that circle.

Some of you folks are just wrapped WAY to tight...

Russ Martin, will you debate me? Will you? ... anytime ... anyplace ...

Personally, I think racial slurs are racial slurs ... no matter WHO says it.

And forget the law ... how about common decency, ethics and manners.

People should respect each other ... not tear each other down.

Throwing out the n-word for ratings is the lowest form of entertainment

I am serious. I will debate Martin about this.

Because ... how on Earth would Martin defend it ...

How?

If he will answer on the board, and tell me the time and the place.

In fact, I will debate him on 105.3 ...

If he dares.

Remember Daredevil ... remember him ... "The Man with No Fear"

Remember Robert Kennedy, the real man with no fear.

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/ekennedytributetorfk.html

Ted Kennedy's eulogy to Robert Kennedy ...

think what America could have been now ... if Robert Kennedy had lived.

listen to it ... and learn ...

You are right.

But as a white man ... trying saying that to a strange man who happens to be black and see how he reacts?

I would not want to see what happens to your face?

Get the drift?

Say that to someone, and you may get what you richly deserve.

Because some will not turn the other cheek.

And frankly, I don't blame them.
