Big Bands Remembered

Jeff Rollins has been featuring a big band era song each morning for the past week. I missed the Thursday show but because of weather-related problems I heard the first song--"Begin the beguine" by artie Shaw. Jeff had a brief biography of Mr. Shaw before playing it.

The next song on wednesday was "Stompin' at the Savoy" by Benny Goodman, with a description of the song rather than the band. "Sentimental Journey" by Les Bown featuring Doris Day was on Friday. A woman called to say how much she enjoyed dancing to Les Brown's music during world War II. In fact, there was a call after one of the other songs too, from someone who really appreciated hearing this good music.

Today it was "Take the A Train" by Duke Ellington.

I recently played an old news clip of a ballroom somewhere in the Midwest during WWII with a live band in the background. The kids visiting my house (older teens and a few 20-somethings) all gathered around the tube for about 10 minutes watching.

I asked them afterward if they thought that kind of dancing was interesting and most said they would like to try it if there was anywhere playing "that dance music".
