Another Reason To Save Your Old Tapes

I went to Sam's Wholesale to stock up on tapes. I avoided the place during the Christmas season and I found that they no longer carry cassette tapes. I wish I could have taken advantage of a close out sale to stock up.

Now I will probably have to go to ebay to buy tapes. No sales tax but a lot of shipping and handling.

Anyone see cassettes in a nearby Sam's?<P ID="signature">______________

There's almost always tapes at my neighborhood Walgreens, though they are sold out sometimes. They usually have TDKs, sometimes have Maxells and Sonys as well. I haven't been inside Sam's Club in years.

The price at Sam's could not be beat. Not on the net or in any retail store. That is what hurts. I think it was 24 for under $11.00.

My neighboorhood Walgreens sells them. Its just a quick walk down the road.

7 pack of TDKs for $6.99 (Sometimes on sale for $4.99)

5 pack of Maxell or Sony for $3.99

I buy the TDK because 1. Maxell has poor sound quality and 2. I've had problems with Sony busting off the wheel.

Never tried Sams Club, as we haven't been a member in over 10 years. There are 2 nearby. Each about 15 miles from here.

Walmart still sells them, but I prefer what Walgreens sells.

Best Buy still sells them (the buy isn't all that good)

Target dumped tapes all together. Good riddence. The TDKs they sold always were too tight and would wind up getting stick.

Once last year I got really lucky at the Goodwill. I found a 20 pack of Maxells. All except 1 were unused fresh in their wrapping. $3.99

I am in Austin, but I have gone to them in Memphis. I remember buying a gas cap for my car at one of them in Memphis.

Yes, but they're WAYYYYY out in the suburbs so I avoid them. I prefer the grocery stores in the neighborhood, and Walgreens is two blocks away.

Thanks for the link. In checking it out, I got this:

Item not available in club 8259.

But I will go to another store on the other side of town. It says that they are still in stock and I will call ahead.

Sam's seems to be phasing out cassettes.

My next place to buy will be:

www.kingdom.com

That is where I used to buy cassettes until I found how much cheaper they were at Sam's.

Mine in Rochester NY is still carrying them, probably because I keep buying them. You're right, it's hard to beat 24 tapes for 11 bucks, and I've had pretty good luck with the Maxell UR90s. I've got about a dozen bricks stored up here, which should get me through most of 2006 if all goes well. I've more or less resigned myself to the idea that cassette airchecking will be a thing of the past after that, at least for me.

They're definitely being phased out at many Sam's Clubs. I looked for them in Terre Haute, Indiana in November and couldn't find any (nor were there any blank audio cassettes at the Circuit City across the street!)

Re: Another Reason To forget about cassettes

Forget cassettes...use a VHS Hi-Fi or a computer. Just update your cassette machines, and come to grips with the fact that the cassette format is dead.
NEVER reuse old tapes!

Some of us don't have Hi-Fi VCRS, or computers with CD burners in them. And Walgreen's still has plenty of cassettes. I wouldn't wanna reuse old tapes...you are right about that one.

The Sam's Club here in Shreveport sells 24 packs of Maxell and Sony...both of which are $10.something. I've seen the 24 packs of Maxells at the Sam's in Waco, but no Sonys there.

Re: Another Reason To forget about cassettes

For me, there is a drawback to VHS and CD. Right now I am listening to BBC Radio 2 (Sound of the Sixties) and I want to keep about five or six songs from a show, so I only turn the recorder on for those songs that I like and keep a master tape. It is not feasible turn a CD off and on all the time.

Re: Another Reason To forget about cassettes

Why not? I reuse old tapes. I see no difference. I completely erase them with a magnet.

I went to the Sam's across town and bought out all of their cassette tapes. It may last a year, the way I record. At least next time I run out, I will have time to play the bidding on ebay.

Great! I'm glad you had success Steven!

I don't have a big magnet. That's why!

1. The oxides on cassettes ( especially on consumer-grade tape) deteriorates after a certain amount of usage. Besides that, you may have something that you scuttle, but regret doing so.

2. If you record with a computer, you don't necessarily have to burn it to CD, you can use a compressed-data format. But I recommend putting it in the form of a wav file if you do, and not use a stand-alone deck to record CDs. Once you get about 70 or 78 minutes, you can burn a CD of all the checks, not wasting any space.

3. And god forbid you put that big magnet in the wrong place.
