All they really needed to do, was ask a DX'er or Ham.

Any serious radio or TV DX'er could have told them that an office complex causes RFI. Most radio astronomy can be affected by even a cell phone or digital camera miles away. They even use ancient diesel vehicles (no spark plugs, and no electronic devices), to eliminate RFI.
Glad they rejected the "wait and see" proposal!

I know this location well. It's not really a radio silent zone - they have visitors and tourists on site every day, and while there are signs asking people to turn off cell phones, I'm not sure how many do. Visitors' cars are obviously standard modern models and are driven and parked within a few hundred yards of the telescope, a major road goes past, and there are farmhouses and even a school with the usual array of broadband/wi-fi technology close by. An annual music festival, Bluedot, is held on the site itself.

It has been encroached on greatly since it was established in the '50s and I'm glad that unnecessary development close to the site (like these proposed offices) has now been stopped, but its main role nowadays is as HQ for the Square Kilometre Array: Square Kilometre Array - Wikipedia
